Open Post: Hosted By The Latest Trailer For The Whitney Houston Biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”
The Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody is only a month and a half away from release, and you can best believe there will be millions of dollars made to see Naomi Ackie portray Whitney while performing a grand Lip Sync For Her CAREER! In the first trailer, there was little to go off of other than the fact it looked like something they could have released directly to Netflix. But the second trailer is out, and it’s bigger, brighter, and bouncier with wigs Nippy herself would have scoffed at in disapproval.
Vulture reports that IWDWS will be out on December 23rd, and the new trailer shows more of her relationship with her father, John Houston (played by Clarke Peters), and the brief time during her career when people didn’t think her music was Black enough.
The film follows from Houston’s discovery by Davis to her massive pop success, promising “the Whitney you never knew” … while, at least in the trailer, mostly showing Houston on progressively bigger stages. The latest trailer introduces some conflict to this story, showing Houston defending herself as a Black artist and arguing with her father over her career. And, yes, singing “I Will Always Love You.”
IWDWS was directed by Kasi Lemmons and written by Bohemian Rhapsody‘s Anthony McCarten. It also stars Stanley Tucci as Clive Davis, Tamara Tunie as Cissy Houston, Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown, and Nafessa Williams as Robyn Crawford. Here’s the newest trailer:
At first glance, my reaction was “Naomi looks more like Brandy than Whitney.” Also, they really are trying their best to tease us with Whitney’s rumored love with Robyn Crawford because the trailer alludes to there being more without actually telling us. But because this biopic was approved by The Whitney Houston Estate, I’m sure that in the end, Robyn and Whitney will both proclaim, “Oh, we’re just gal pals!”
