Marlo Thomas Apologized For Her Comments About Sherri Shepherd’s Weight Loss

November 3, 2022 / Posted by:

Yesterday Marlo Thomas made headlines after she went on Sherri Shepherd’s talk show and put her foot in her mouth. 84-year-old Marlo brought up Sherri’s 35-pound weight loss, and said, “you used to be a big woman!” Then she attempted to mime Sherri’s old size by sticking out her arms and puffing out her face. Sherri laughed it off, but Page Six reported that her staff was pissed. So were Sherri’s fans, who accused Marlo of flat-shaming the fat-earther (oops, strike that, reverse it). Today, Marlo went on Good Day New York and apologized for her comments. She explains that she thought she was giving Sherri a compliment, but she’s learned her lesson and she’ll “never do it again.” Then, in her mind, Marlo added, “…on camera.”

Here’s exactly what Marlo said, via Page Six:

“I am so sorry about that,” the award-winning actress, 84, said on “Good Day New York” Thursday.

“I mean, I love her, and I thought I was giving a compliment. I said, ‘Wow, you’ve really lost weight!’ but I realized you’re not supposed to do that.” Thomas also noted that she has “learned [her] lesson” and will “never do it again.”

“I’m never going to tell you how good you look. Never,” the “That Girl” alum jokingly told Fox 5 anchor Rosanna Scotto with a laugh.

Marlo also shared that Sherri called her up after the story broke, and they’re completely fine:

“She said, ‘Oh my god, I don’t know what this is about!’ I said, ‘Don’t worry.’ But, uh, you know, that’s a new thing, and I certainly understand it. I’m so sorry, I never meant to ever offend anything. But I didn’t offend her. She came and jumped over on the couch and hugged me and she just asked me to come back in November to do a St. Jude piece. So, you know, we’re fine. But you know, that’s kinda the way things are now.”

Here’s the clip:

Some people online weren’t happy with Marlo’s response, calling it a “non-apology.” But we have to remember that Marlo got famous 60 years ago. Shit was different back then! Slapping a woman’s ass, telling her she needed to drop 5 pounds, and pouring a bottle of diet pills down her throat was considered a thoughtful gesture! For the times they are a-changin’…
