As if there could have been any doubt about it, Taylor Swift‘s new album, Midnights, which was released on October 21, sold more albums in a week than anybody else because her fans easily eat up her mid-tempo Top 40 pop music that will play in every doctor’s office and CVS for the rest of time. Billboard reports that Taylor’s tenth studio album sold 1.578 million “equivalent album units” in one week, and the only other female to sell more is Adele, who sold 3.482 million copies of her album 25 seven years ago. Welp, one thing is for sure: Taylor Swift’s cats are eating well tonight and every night! Surely, Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson must be richer than Choupette Lagerfeld by now!
This is Taylor’s 11th #1 album on the Billboard 200. Taylor is now tied with Barbra Streisand for the female artist with the most #1 albums. Midnights is also the best-selling album of the year in the US already based on these numbers, beating Harry Style‘s Harry’s House, which sold 633,000 copies since it was released in May. Here are the Top 5 albums of the week in the United States:
1 – Taylor Swift, Midnights – 1.578 million
2 – Lil Baby, It’s Only Me – 110,000
3 – Bad Bunny, Un Verano Sin Ti – 67,000
4 – Morgan Wallen, Dangerous: The Double Album – 43,000
5 – The Weeknd, The Highlights – 39,000
And over in the UK, Midnights‘ beat the Arctic Monkeys’ new album, The Car, and it’s the band’s first album to not debut at #1 on the UK charts. Imagine getting cockblocked for a consecutive #1 in your own house by Taylor Swift! The scandal! Midnights sold 204,000 copies in the UK, while The Car sold 100,000 copies.
And the vinyl edition of Midnights brought in the biggest sales week for a vinyl album sold in the modern era (the tracking started in 1991). IN FACT, she sold more vinyl records than CDs, as 1.14 million of the physical sales comprised of 575,000 vinyl, 395,000 CDs, and 10,000 cassettes. Midnights also racked up 549.26 million in streams. And that’s a lot, but Drake still holds the top 2 spots for the most-streamed album as Scorpion and Certified Lover Boy both had over 700 million streams in their opening weeks.
It’s clear that this album is really taking all the top spots. I think the only other way Taylor could have sold more albums would be if she decided to go with Guy Fierie‘s cover art instead of her own. Now that album has some flavor! I’d stream it for Guy’s face alone!
