PeeWee, the mixed bull terrier who is deaf and can understand sign language commands!

Nikki Engleman and her partner are two gold-hearted humans from Minnesota who rescue and foster dogs with hearing loss. About ten years ago, Nikki rescued a then-7-month-old mixed bull terrier stray who was born deaf and was found in a bad way with burns and a rash covering his poor, little body. Nikki named the puppy PeeWee, and she nursed him to health! And today, not only is PeeWee all-CAPS bold THRIVING but he’s also gotten a little viral fame thanks to being the smartest smarty smarty smart boy evah!

PeeWee has been entertaining the people on TikTok and Instagram for years, but recently, he really made hearts melt into a puddle of AWWWW in a video where Nikki signs, “treat,” “dad,” and “go” in ASL to him, and he immediately knows what she’s telling him and runs up the stairs to get the goods. PeeWee’s foster sister Faith, who is also hearing impaired, follows the leader. Behold, a dog with a better grasp of human language than me (although, that’s not saying much)!

When one cynical bitch commenter shrugged like, “SO WHAT?!“, and accused Nikki of pulling trickery, she shut that uneducated fucker down by showing off more of PeeWee’s impeccable ASL-reading skills:

Replying to @thesmizzle it did look like he was food motivated for that one! Here’s more! Lmk if you have other signs I could teach him! ❤️ #dad #asl #signlanguage #deafdog #dogsoftiktok #fyp #fypシ

Nikki explained that after they rescued PeeWee and discovered he’s deaf, they learned basic ASL signs to use with him, and he quickly picked ’em up like the genius he is! via The Daily Mail:

“We bought a signing with your baby book to learn how to sign but I did it with him instead. It was a complete learning curve. I only knew a couple of things such as ‘thank you’ and ‘please.’ He learns super fast, I taught him roll over in a day and he knows other words such as baby. I started with the basics, I would sign for food and going to the bathroom and he picked it up.

He’s very smart, he’s one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever had. He knows about 15 signs in total. Some things are different with having a deaf dog, we have to tap him to get his attention or flicker the lights as he can’t hear us calling for him.”

And here’s Nikki signing “ball” to sweet PeeWee, and it’s apparently one of his favorite signs:

Replying to @sammymdragon88 “Ball” was super fun to teach!! He also knows ‘drop’ for when we play fetch! 🎾 #ball #asl #deafdog #dogsoftiktok #deaf #fyp #fypシ

So whenever you need to be reminded that humanity isn’t completely a shit show, just remember that there’s a human in Minnesota who signs to her deaf dogs. And as dog humans know, we develop our own language with our pets. For example, my dog gently puts her paw on my thigh or arm in a way that tells me, “Stop, please stop.” And strangely enough, she does that every time I pick up my phone to stalk my exes on Instagram.
