Chris Redd Was Attacked Outside Of The Comedy Cellar In NYC

Chris Redd was attacked outside the Comedy Cellar in NYC last night. According to TMZ, the former SNL cast member drove up to the comedy club around 9:40 PM, shortly before he was scheduled to perform a 15-minute set. Moments after Chris got out of the car, he was punched in the face by some dude who tried to grab his trés chic Greg Yuna chain. The man ran off, and a shocked, bloodied Chris was helped by Comedy Cellar staff. He was then taken to Bellevue Hospital, treated for his injuries (which include a deep cut on his nose), and released. TMZ says he’s gonna be OK. What a relief! Poor Chris doesn’t deserve to get attacked. He didn’t even say anything transphobic or insult Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia!

TMZ says the assailant was a random guy in a security guard uniform. Witnesses say that when Chris’ chain was snatched off, it fell apart in the attacker’s hand (it’s one of those pieces where all the links come apart). After the guy ran away, Chris was able to recover the chain from the sidewalk. Page Six reports that the suspect was one of two men who had been hanging out outside the venue for an hour before Chris’ arrival. Their sources seem to think it was a targeted attack:

He [Chris] was hanging outside around 9:30 p.m. when one of the men approached him and slugged him “out of nowhere,” according to a source, before running off. “There was blood everywhere,” we’re told.

After the incident, police arrived on the scene quickly; they’d been patrolling the area. Unfortunately, they were too late to catch the suspects. Witnesses say that the cops took pictures of Chris’ injuries, which include a deep cut on his nose. TMZ has video of the aftermath. There’s blood all over the Comedy Cellar stairs and sidewalk. 37-year-old Chris is shown sitting while a woman holds gauze or tissue to his face to stop the bleeding:

As mentioned in Crumbs last month, Chris has a new girlfriend, Christina Evangeline. But, TWIST: Christina is Kenan Thompson’s estranged wife. Yep, the same Kenan Thompson who Chris worked with on SNL and the short-lived NBC sitcom, Kenan. Kenan and Christina have two kids together and split in April, although sources say they’ve been living separately since 2019. DOUBLE TWIST: Kenan’s allegedly OK with his friend and ex dating. Insiders claim there was no cheating, the relationship had nothing to do with Chris’ recent exit from SNL, and there are “no hard feelings” on Kenan’s part. Except, well… Chris did just get attacked. And was the assailant a random guy in a security guard uniform? Or Kenan in a costume he swiped from SNL?
