Adele Finally Released The Video For “I Drink Wine” And Said Taylor Swift’s One Of The Greatest Songwriters Of Our Generation

A year ago, all anyone could talk about was Adele’s much anticipated fourth album, 30. “When’s 30 coming out?! It’s been six years since 25! I’m gonna go fucking apeshit if Adele doesn’t give us 30!!!” Adele finally released the album’s first single,Easy On Me,” and its music video in mid-October 2021. The next month, the full album came out. Soon, the album’s second single, “I Drink Wine” was announced. During an appearance on YouTube’s NikkieTutorials, Adele shared that the song’s music video had been shot and “it’s the campiest thing you’ll ever see.” She even boasted that it would inspire peoples’ 2022 Halloween costumes. But then… nothing. The song “Oh My God” quietly replaced “I Drink Wine” as 30’s second single, and its video was released in January. After that, all the Adele headlines focused on her Las Vegas residency disaster. Cut to today: the official “I Drink Wine” music video arrived! I guess right in time for Halloween? Great, just a few days to find a white bathing suit, a black and gold sequin swim cap, and a glass of vino (OK, that last one’s easy).

In the video, Adele floats down a lazy river in a gold sequin dress. She’s drinking, you guess it, WINE! Adele floats by some actors, including Insecure’s Kendrick Sampson. Soon, Kendrick gets in the water and smiles at Adele in a hot way. Then, Esther Williams-style swimmers show up and do some dancey water-synchronized shit. Then it gets dark. The entire video is 7 minutes long and finishes by breaking the fourth wall. Here it is:

I mean, it’s very pretty. It’s giving me that one painting of Ophelia drowning herself. Except with more wine.

To celebrate the long-awaited release of “I Drink Wine,” Adele hosted a fan event called Happy Hour with Adele. When a fan asked her if she’d listened to Taylor Swift’s Midnights yet, she said she hadn’t gotten a chance because she’s been in rehearsals “for like 12 hours a fucking day” (her rescheduled Vegas residency allegedly begins November 18). But she says that she’ll “definitely give it a listen” because she believes “Taylor’s one of the greatest songwriters of our generation.” She adds that she loved Taylor’s last couple of albums, and “she makes a release fun!” Here’s the clip:

Listen, I’m not a Swiftie. I haven’t listened to Midnights or any of Taylor’s forest-fairy COVID releases. So I can neither confirm nor deny Adele’s declaration that she’s one of the greatest songwriters. But, the real question is, would the uncle-nephew duo LMFAO be considered part of this generation? Cuz they managed to get famous for writing a bunch of songs about something called “Party Rocking”. Ipso facto, they are my vote for the greatest songwriters.
