Open Post: Hosted By The “Karen”-Themed Halloween Display That Was Removed Over Complaints
If you’ve been planning on buying one of those 12-foot skeletons from Home Depot to put on your lawn for Halloween, may I suggest something far more terrifying and spine-chilling? Take a gander at the Karen erected by the people of Prosser, Washington. The monstrosity was placed in front of City Hall and featured a Karen name tag as well as a shirt with the phrase “Can I speak to the manager?” emblazoned on it. There’s spooky, and then there’s downright scary! Unfortunately for this Karen, a bunch of actual Karens came for her and demanded that she be taken down. Looks like irony came to Washington.
The display was meant to be part of a local decorating contest, but according to the brigade of Karens, they believed that the decoration was making fun of their group and should be taken down posthaste! According to the New York Post:
Lifelong Prosser resident Maricela Sanchez, who helps lead the community group Friends of Prosser, claimed that the dummy was erected to ridicule her over her group’s opposition to an upcoming $16.8 million bond package to replace Prosser City Hall and Police Station, the Yakima Herald reported.
“This past weekend, City Hall entered an annual Halloween decorating contest with a ghoulish scarecrow dressed up to look like me,” Sanchez complained in a statement. “Several people who understood the context behind the display immediately complained to the city.”
The physician declared the Kare-crow a form of “targeted, public harassment of a private Prosser citizen on public grounds.” “They created a grotesque effigy to publicly humiliate a city resident as retaliation for opposing a city bond proposal on the upcoming ballot,” she fumed.
The group got their wish, and the decoration was summarily taken down by the city. Although the display was removed, a city administrator said that it wasn’t a jab at Friends of Prosser and that “no one who participated in creating the entry intended any malice.” Presumably, the administrator followed this statement with a big wink. Here’s a news report on Halloween Karen:
It’s sad that this Karen met her untimely end at the hand of other Karens. She was one of them! City Hall shouldn’t give in so easily. A decoration of this caliber should be made available for all to see. Just put a “Jane” or “Maricela” on the name tag, and voila! No more Karen-bashing!
