“The Crown” Will Recreate The Infamous Tampon Call Between King Charles And Queen Consort Camilla
Back in 1989, King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla were having a horny little phone chat, when Charles said it would be “so much easier” if he could live inside Camilla’s trousers. Camilla joked that maybe Charles would get reincarnated as a pair of “knickers,” and Charles replied, “Or, God forbid, a Tampax! Just my luck!” Four years later, this conversation was leaked to the press, and it caused quite the scandal. But guess who loves royal scandals? Netflix’s The Crown! In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dominic West, who plays Charles in the fifth and sixth seasons, confirmed that the show will recreate the King and Queen Consort’s infamous phone call. Princess Diana’s death, and now Tampongate? The makers of The Crown aren’t afraid to get blood on their hands (I’m so sorry).
Back in 2020, Josh O’Connor, who played the younger version of Charles, revealed he’d refused to shoot the tampon scene because it was too damn cringey, via Vanity Fair:
“When they offered me the role, one of my first questions was—I say questions, I think it was pretty much a statement—‘We are not doing the tampon phone call,’” he previously told SirusXM’s EW Live. “[The Crown] was my one chance for my parents to see something [I’ve acted in] with no shame and there’s no way I was going to scuttle that by talking about tampons on Netflix.”
But Dominic will, via EW:
“I remember thinking it was something so sordid and deeply, deeply embarrassing [at the time],” he says. “Looking back on it, and having to play it, what you’re conscious of is that the blame was not with these two people, two lovers, who were having a private conversation. What’s really [clear now] is how invasive and disgusting was the press’s attention to it, that they printed it out verbatim and you could call a number and listen to the actual tape. I think it made me extremely sympathetic towards the two of them and what they’d gone through.”
Dominic adds that Olivia Williams, who plays Camilla, also sympathized with the couple:
“We both felt that we wanted to do right by our characters. We felt the odds were slightly stacked against their relationship and we wanted to try and bring it across in as sympathetic a light as we could.”
I’m not surprised Dominic has sympathy for Camila and Charles. He was involved in his own extramarital sex scandal a couple of years ago when he cheated on his wife with Lily James. Unless… OMG. Is Dominic method? Did he have the affair (and purposely get caught) for his role on The Crown? And that’s why his wife stayed with him because she supports his art! And to think, we called this committed thespian a down and dirty love rat. For shame, us! For shame.
