Nicki Minaj Went Off At The Grammys For Moving Her Song “Super Freaky Girl” Into The Pop Category, And Dragged Latto Into It

Another day, and yet another Nicki Minaj rant. Although, I think Nicki is now getting the benefit of having her rantings compared to Kanye West’s garbage, and she at least doesn’t veer into weird anti-Semitic conspiracies. This time, Nicki is pissed that the Recording Academy placed her song Super Freaky Girl in the Best Pop category for the 2023 Grammys, and of course, it’s a part of a nefarious backroom plan to keep Nicki down. The first part makes sense on its face because it is a rap song but who is this conspiratorial body that is against Nicki Minaj? And Nicki’s beef with the Grammys also turned into a beef with fellow rapper Latto after Nicki dragged her into it.
SFG spent eight weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart, and had more than 3 million Spotify streams when it was released, making it the biggest solo female hip-hop record debut in Spotify’s history. Here’s the track:
According to a source who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, Nicki submitted the track as a rap song, but the powers that be decided it’s more of a pop song. via Complex:
A source claimed the Academy pulled the track from rap consideration after determining it was better suited for Best Pop Solo Performance…
The insider said the decision was primarily based on the playful, poppy of the song, which samples Rick James’ iconic 1981 hit Super Freak. THR writes that there have been other tracks with “rap elements” that have competed for pop awards. These include Lizzo’s Truth Hurts, Doja Cat’s Say So, and Post Malone’s Better Now.
Nicki has been nominated for ten Grammys throughout her career, and only put into the pop category with one other song, Bang Bang with Jessie J and Ariana Grande–which she doesn’t give a shit about! So this must be very shocking for her for a song she actually likes that doesn’t feature two pop starlets. And she hopped onto Instagram to lay into the Academy for the decision:
“Super Freaky Girl, where I only rapped on the song, was removed out of the rap categories at the Grammys and put in pop… [Drake’s] Hotline Bling won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Sung [Performance].”
Minaj went on to applaud Drake for calling out his own wins, stating that the 2017 hit was not a hip-hop song. She continued, “Now, let’s say that Super Freaky Girl is a pop song. Let’s just say that. What is [Latto’s] Big Energy? … If you move Super Freaky Girl out of rap and put it in pop, do the same thing for Big Energy. Same producers on both songs, by the way. So let’s keep shit fair. Even when I’m rapping on a pop track, I still out-rap.”
Minaj also said the decision was a form of sabotage. “What do you think is going to happen when they start voting on these pop categories?… And it’s a bunch of people—white or whatever they’re from, older or whatever—and they have to decide between Nicki Minaj and Harry Styles, or Nicki Minaj and Adele. Like, that’s purposely designed so that Nicki is not in the category that we don’t want any competition in. “Put her in there so she has less of a chance to win.” …But Black women rarely—even though we’re the most powerful group on the planet, a lot of times we don’t speak up until it’s too late.”
Here’s Nicki’s full TED Talk:
During Nicki’s rant, she mentioned Latto‘s song Big Energy. Nicki feels like if SFG is going into the pop category, so should Latto’s Big Energy. Nicki then re-tweeted tweets from her Barbz who were pissed that Latto was quiet on this extremely important subject. So Latto defended herself and called Nicki the true bully.
I’ve ignored countless subtweets since March and instead addressed u in the dm. You’re asking why I didn’t speak up in ur defense… it’s the same answer I gave u when u asked why I didn’t congratulate you. Ur literally older than my mom tryna be a bully @NICKIMINAJ

Nicki clapped back at Latto for “age-shaming” her and called Latto a “Karen.”

And Latto even released a recording of a conversation the two had, saying that she knew who she was dealing with when it came to Nicki:
Lemme specify I’m sorry. Im delusional for saying “we’re” (newer female rappers) are flourishing & u said no one cares about my little song LYRICS my bad. FYI I only recorded cause I KNOW who tf I’m playing wit #40yroldbully https://t.co/ocBAA3uVeF pic.twitter.com/RHqEu8XFYD

Sigh… It seems like just yesterday that it was Justin Bieber who was crying about not being considered in the right category—unfortunately, now he has real problems; so Nicki can take over the whining. And while her song actually should be in the rap category, she already has real problems to deal with, like her husband, Kenneth Petty, being a registered sex offender. Maybe she could finally get that cleared up and then start dragging everyone for trying to sabotage her.
