M.I.A. Compared Alex Jones’ Sandy Hook Conspiracy Theories To Celebrities Promoting Vaccines

I haven’t thought about M.I.A. since she flipped us the bird at the Super Bowl Halftime show ten years ago. But, this week, she was thrust back into my consciousness for a very random reason. M.I.A. compared Alex Jones‘ lying about the Sandy Hook shooting to celebrities promoting COVID vaccines. Heh? Some context, in case you only get your news from this site (and good for you!): trash conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has been ordered to pay nearly $1 billion in restitution to the families of the victims killed at Sandy Hook, cuz he said the tragedy never happened and the grieving parents were paid actors. M.I.A. took to Twitter to add her two cents. Unfortunately, both of those cents were absolutely certifiable. She wrote, “If Alex jones pays for lying, shouldn’t every celebrity pushing vaccines pay too?” Rational thinking: it isn’t for everyone.

Here’s M.I.A.’s first tweet, and Elijah Wood’s very thoughtful reply:

I guess M.I.A. is saying that Alex Jones’ lies are the same as celebrities’ “lies” about the vaccine. She’s an anti-vaxxer, folks! And she wasn’t going to let a hobbit’s confusion stop her from  doubling down on her opinions FACTS:

I feel… confused. Here’s what I think she’s saying: both of these topics are trending. Alex is being penalized for his lies. Those who “lie” about Pfizer being an effective vaccine for COVID have faced no penalties. If we are too dumb to understand, this double standard is as crazy as the human race should get before we’re wiped out by nuclear war.

OK! So, at this point, M.I.A. wasn’t so much pro-Alex Jones as she was anti-vaccines and anti-lies. But her subsequent tweets muddy the waters a bit (I think? Me confused). First, she tweeted that she wanted to “speak with a lawyer and defamation expert” about how the media lied about the Tamil death toll in 2009, during the Sri Lankan Civil War:

Then, this:

After that, M.I.A. tweeted “WMDs” and “2008 financial crash,” I guess as examples of famous lies. She finished with this:

If you made it this far, congratulations! You are entitled to one brain de-scrambling, which can be reimbursed anywhere they sell drills and egg beaters.
