Netflix’s Newest Trailer For “Wednesday” Gives A Glimpse Of Fred Armisen As Uncle Fester and Reveals Christina Ricci’s Role

Because the current era has been unkind and unworthy of encapsulating and all of the universe’s original thoughts have apparently already been thunk, nostalgic reboots and spin-offs are at an all-time high. Paramount+ is reviving Frasier, Vh1 is bringing back The Surreal Life, Hocus Pocus 2 just unleashed hell in homes everywhere, and Netflix’s announced addition to The Addams Family franchise, Wednesday, is coming to Netflix next month. We already knew that the Tim Burton-directed series would star Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán as Morticia and Gomez Addams and that Jenna Ortega would play Wednesday. We also saw the cast in a teaser trailer, but a freshly dropped trailer revealed that Fred Armisen is Uncle Fester. We also get to see that Christina Ricci–who, as a child actress, played Wednesday in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values movies–has a role in the upcoming series as well.

According to People, The Wednesday trailer was released at New York Comic Con on Saturday, and the show hits Netflix on November 23. Fingers crossed that the series slips in another memorable “Thanksgiving Playscene somewhere since it would be seasonally appropriate with that release date.

Armisen, 55, appears in the trailer as the beloved bald character, surprising his niece Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) in the woods as they set off on an adventure to get to the bottom of the strange occurrences at her new school, Nevermore Academy.

In the new trailer, Wednesday’s parents Gomez and Morticia Addams (Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones) drop her off at Nevermore, a school for supernaturally gifted outcasts, where a mystery involving “secret societies, hidden libraries, a homicidal monster” begins to unfold.

“What other surprises are in store?” Wednesday asks in a voiceover. “Nevermore continues to be a place where the questions far outweigh the answers. I won’t stop until I find the truth. I know the suspense is killing you.”

And while I’d love to see Christina playing a morose, homicidal adult goth, she won’t be reprising her role as Wednesday; but is a part of the cast.

Wednesday not only marks Ricci’s return to the franchise after playing the character in 1991’s The Addams Family and the 1993 sequel Addams Family Values, but also her reunion with director Tim Burton, who she previously worked with on 1999’s Sleepy Hollow.

The sneak peek also gives fans a glimpse at Christina Ricci in character as the red-haired, cardigan-clad Ms. Thornhill, a Nevermore faculty member welcoming Wednesday and her roommate Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers).

“I trust Enid has given you the old Nevermore welcome,” she tells Wednesday, who quips: “She’s been smothering me with hospitality. I hope to return the favor… in her sleep.”

Here’s a look at the trailer:

If I had to choose one Christina Ricci project to reboot it would be 1995’s Casper, since Devon Sawa murmuringcan I keep you?” at the end ignited all kinds of unfamiliar tingles for me, but I’ll give Wednesday a shot.  But good for Fred for landing a role where he gets to play a creep since he’s reportedly been creepy for years!
