Cheryl Burke Says That She’ll Fight Her Ex, Matthew Lawrence, In Court For Custody Of Their Dog

Because the court docket in a state where excessive water usage violations and Erika Jayne Girardi exist isn’t full enough, Dancing With The Stars pro, Cheryl Burke just waltzed in to make it known that she’s ready to go to war with her recent ex-husband, Matthew Lawrence, when it comes to the custody of the couple’s particularly human-named French Bulldog, Ysabella.

While Cheryl and Matthew’s divorce is settled, Cheryl revealed on her Burke in the Game podcast that Matthew’s planning a trip to court in an attempt to snatch her beloved dogter, but she’s not going to twirl gently into the night. via TooFab:

“We are going to go to trial — unless he all of a sudden calls it off, but that would happen … and that will happen in January,” Burke, 38, said. “I’m just still really hurt by the whole situation. You know, that’s my dog. Ysabella is my daughter.”

“I’m a dog mom. And that’s it,” she explained. “I can’t even imagine my life. I mean, I could just cry right now but like, couldn’t imagine my life without her.”

Here are Cheryl’s most recent pics with Ysabella:

Cheryl and Matthew were on, off, and then back on before marrying and then filing for divorce earlier this year.

The “Dancing with the Stars” pro and “Boy Meets World” alum first met back in 2006 when the latter’s brother Joey Lawrence competed on Season 3 of the competitive reality series, and Burke was a “DWTS” pro at the time. The pair began their romance in 2007 and dated for a year before going their separate ways and eventually rekindling their love affair in 2017.

Burke and Lawrence, 42, tied the knot in May 2019 after getting engaged the year prior. The two were due to hit their third anniversary before Burke filed for divorce in February.

According to TMZ, the “Dance Moms” alum listed her date of separation as January 7, and cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the breakup.

If I had the brains or ambition to be a California dog custody judge, I’d examine a variety of evidence to decide on my verdict. First, I’d meander over to the Instagrams of Cheryl and Matthew to examine who spends the most time caring for Ysabella. Over the years, Cheryl has posted several snaps featuring Ysabella, while Matthew’s posts heavily feature a bunch of iguanas and turtles since he apparently now refers to himself as “Mr. Reptile Man,” yet there are no shots of Ysabella to be found. Next, I’d put Matthew and Cheryl through the agony of the “Judge Judy Good Boy Baby Boyloyalty challenge, just for suspenseful purposes. Lastly, I’d present the below video where at the 1:30 mark, Cheryl and Matthew both acknowledge that he gave Ysabella to Cheryl as a gift. In many California divorce cases, gifts get to stay with the recipient. So in my worse-than-below-basic understanding of divorce and property laws, Matthew would be the clear loser here.
