Open Post: Hosted By Shoebert, The Fugitive Seal Surrendering To Police

A fugitive that has been aimlessly wandering the state of Massachusetts has finally been apprehended. No, it’s not former Pat Tom Brady trying to escape his family in Florida. It’s Shoebert, the renegade seal. He was found haunting Shoe Pond in the city of Beverly for about a month and finally after multiple attempts featuring giant cartoon-like nets, the police have him in custody. Don’t let the sweet face fool you. This seal is a hardened criminal!

Beverly residents were baffled that a big marine mammal was kicking it with some ducks in the local Shoe Pond. The theory is that Shoebert found his way from the ocean into the pond using drainage pipes and nearby rivers. Knowing that seals aren’t supposed to spend their lives being fed tiny pieces of bread by pensioners, wildlife officials and other authorities took it upon themselves to evict Shoebert from his new home and take him somewhere more suitable. Their efforts were for naught until Shoebert decided to do the honorable thing and give himself up. via HuffPo:

Firefighters and wildlife experts used boats and giant nets in an effort to capture the wily animal Thursday, but gave up after several fruitless hours. Early Friday morning, however, Shoebert left the pond, crossed a parking lot and appeared outside the side door of the local police station looking, according to a police statement, “for some help.”

The seal was quickly corralled by a team of wildlife experts, firefighters and the police department’s “entire midnight shift,” according to a Facebook post from the Beverly Police Department.

The police department communicated that Shoebert was doing fine in custody although he was a little “sassy” about the ordeal. He’s currently being held in the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut awaiting trial where a jury of his peers will decide his fate. Actually, some marine biologists will determine whether or not Shoebert should stay in the aquarium or be released into the wild. Those biologists should keep an eye on this slippery seal. Shoebert has escaped his home once before, there’s no telling if he’ll do it again. The ducks of Shoe Pond better stay on high alert!
