Bubble Yum Checker Mint Gum!

In the 80s, the makers of Bubble Yum decided to give every memaw’s third favorite candy (after strawberry hard candy and Werther’s) an 80s reboot. Bubble Yum put a peppermint candy and a piece of their own gum in a room together, dimmed the lights, lit some candles, turned on a little Marvin Gaye, and let the magic happen. Nine months later, the 80s baby of a Bubble Yum gum and a peppermint was born!

Bubble Yum’s Checker Mint gum came out sometime in the 1980s. It was decorated with a red and white checker design and tasted like peppermint. I completely forgot about its existence until reader Chris submitted it for an HSOTD nomination. Chris forgot about the existence of Bubble Yum’s Checker Mint gum too until he found a WHOLE thing of it in a box of his old stuff. I congratulated him on now being a member of the 1% since an entire package of Bubble Yum’s Checker Mint gum must be worth millions now! Here’s a Bubble Yum Checker Mint ad from 1986 that will give you a case of 80s overload. WARNING: Watching it may make you say “awesome” in casual conversation today.

Of course, there are many peppermint-flavored gum brands out there (“You don’t say?!!!!” – you) but Bubble Yum’s Checker Mint gum was special because it was a mini checkerboard! So I’m sure that those who miss Bubble Yum’s Checker Mint gum scratch that nostalgia itch a bit by using Wite-Out and a red marker to draw a checker design on a regular piece of gum. And then they bite into that nastiness and curse Bubble Yum’s name for discontinuing Checker Mint gum in the first place!
