Open Post: Hosted By The Trailer For The Upcoming Whitney Houston Biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”
For years it has been rumored there would be a feature film depicting Whitney Houston‘s life because people took one look at that Lifetime mess of a movie and knew she deserved much better. So now with a budget that includes proper lighting and somewhat better wigs the trailer for The Whitney Estate-approved biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, starring Naomi Ackie, has arrived and it’s giving glamour, despair, and VOCALS! However, since Naomi is lip-syncing throughout the film, somewhere up in heaven Whitney is probably looking down with her trademarked side eye singing “Shut up, just shut up..SHUT UP!”
The trailer looks lightyears ahead of what Lifetime tried to do, but that’s not hard. Variety reports it was all a labor of love for the production team who wants to honor Whitney’s legacy by charging $20 a pop for people to listen to someone who isn’t Whitney pretend to sing her songs. In other words, it’s a two-hour drag show with a little bit of acting sprinkled in for good measure.
“Naomi Ackie has the daunting task of portraying the legendary vocal powerhouse in the film, along with a cast that includes Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown and Stanley Tucci as Clive Davis. Clarke Peters will be playing John Houston, Whitney’s father, and Tamara Tunie will be portraying Cissy Houston, Whitney’s mother.
Sony describes “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” as a “no-holds-barred portrait of the complex and multifaceted woman behind The Voice.” The film recounts the story of a New Jersey choir girl who became one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time.
Here is the trailer so you can ponder whether or not you’ll be entering a theater or awaiting its arrival on streaming.
It looks like they will be touching upon Whitney’s “friendship” with Robyn Crawford and the tense demands her mother Cissy Houston placed upon her, so that’s reason enough to see it. But then again, after all of the documentaries that have come out this really seems more like a quick cash grab for people still milking Whitney’s legacy for as much money as they can. And if they don’t mention Whitney’s iconic moments during Being Bobby Brown just throw the whole movie away right now.
