Open Post: Hosted By The Card That Gave Regis Philbin Free McDonald’s For Life

It’s been two years since TV icon Regis Philbin departed from this planet. He may be gone, but he’s not forgotten. It was recently revealed that Regis was the proud owner of a gold card gifted by McDonald’s. This wasn’t any run-of-the-mill card though. It bestowed Regis with one of the earth’s greatest honors: free McDonald’s for life! Not only did Regis hold the Guinness World Record for most hours spent on TV, but he also held a rare magic card that granted him free fries. The legend of Regis grows! And who knew that Dinah Lohan’s Carvel Black Card could ever be topped?

Michael Schur, TV producer and Regis’s son-in-law, relayed the story of the mythical card on a podcast. via UPROXX:

Parks and Recreation and The Good Place creator Michael Schur joined The Dan Le Batard Show on Wednesday and shared an amusing story about Philbin, his father-in-law. “He did an ad for McDonalds sometime in the early ‘90s,” he said. “And as part of the thanks for this, he was given a gold-colored credit card thing that said, ‘This card entitles Regis Philbin to free McDonald’s for life’ and he loved this.”

Schur said that whenever Philbin would present the card for a free burger or whatever, “the cashier would just stare at it confused, because it was like ‘what is this, why is Regis Philbin in this random McDonald’s demanding free $3 hamburgers?’ They would go ‘I’ve never seen this before, I need to call someone,’ and it’d be this confusing thing.” That’s the honest way to becoming a millionaire: by getting a Quarter Pounder for free.

Move out of the way, black Amex. The only way to tell if someone is actually rich and famous is if they have a lifetime McDonald’s pass (cut to Kathie Lee Gifford commenting, “Pfft if it’s not a lifetime subscription to Wine.com, I’m not interested!”). Michael went on to say that Regis kept the card in his wallet and would get really excited when he’d see a McDonald’s (a relatable king). Due to the rarity and unknown nature of the card, he always ended up paying for his meals. I guess showing up with a bizarre McDonald’s pass was enough of a thrill for Regis, so handing over a few bucks for a Big Mac was a small price to pay. If someone refused to give me my free Filet-O-Fish, you better believe I’d be hopping that counter and burning my fingers to get me some super-sized fries! RIP, Regis. You were certainly a better person than I’ll ever be!
