Dominic Monaghan Says Evangeline Lilly Cheated On Him And Broke His Heart
Dominic Monaghan, best known as cute lil’ hobbit Merry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Charlie on Lost, guested on the most recent episode of Anna Faris’ podcast, Unqualified, and revealed that proud anti-vaxxer/Ottawa Freedom Convoy-supporter Evangeline Lilly was the only person who ever broke his heart. The couple, who co-starred together on Lost, began dating in 2004, the same year Evangeline divorced her Canadian college sweetheart. E! Online reports that 45-year-old Dominic claims he and Evangeline, now 43, were super serious. Unfortunately, they split in 2007 due to Dominic’s passion for drinking and partying. Oh, and Evangeline’s passion for her other boyfriend. Oops, she cheated on him!
Dominic tells Anna, via E! Online:
“I was dating an actress on Lost called Evangeline Lilly, who, you know, has gone on to have a name all of her own. I don’t really know how she would explain the narrative, but from my point of view, it was probably the first time in my life that I was all in.”
Dominic says that he and Evangeline began discussing marriage and kids, but his partying was a problem:
“Even though I would get my work done and at that point I was a very committed actor to Lost, I would only consider it a weekend if I was drunk out of my mind on a Friday and Saturday night. I thought that was normal.”
Monaghan continued, “I think if you are drinking often, probably your behavior, choices and mood are up for debate and I think Evie was pretty straight down the middle… I was always the guy that wanted more.”
“I think she was looking around to see what else was an option,” he alleged. “Unfortunately, there was a bit of a crossover which was upsetting for me and it exploded in my face in an awful way.”
Dominic says someone finally told him that Evangeline was seeing someone else. He believes the bean-spiller was trying to help because they were afraid “the island of Oahu was laughing at me” (Lost was shot there, he wasn’t just freaked out about a random island in Hawaii mocking him). Dominic adds that he was extra-devastated because he felt that the Lost crew had kept Evangeline’s cheating from him. After their split, Dominic hit a rock bottom:
“Two months into the breakup I woke up on my kitchen floor, I didn’t know what time it was and my house was black,” he shared. “I was surrounded by pills and I was messed up on medication. I sat up and looked at this mess in front of me and thought ‘this could have been it.’ I could have accidentally taken the wrong cocktail of stuff mixed with alcohol, mixed with where my heads at and that could have been it. At that point it was a big turning point.”
That also wasn’t the first time Dominic blasted one of his Lost co-stars on Twitter. In 2012 a fan asked him to “holla” at Matthew Fox and get him on Twitter. Dominic tweeted back, “he beats women. No thanks.” When another fan urged him to remember all the good times he and Matthew had together, he wrote, “How do you know we ever did? You don’t know either of us. He beats women. Not isolated incidents. Often.” Daaamn, Merry Brandybuck doesn’t hold back! Matthew later told Men’s Journal that what Dominic said was “a pile of bullshit, and I’m not gonna waste too much breath on that.” But, up until a recent starring role in the Peacock mini-series Last Light, the dude hadn’t appeared in anything since 2015, so it sounds like Hollywood is (or was) Team Dom.
Unfortunately, Dominic’s valiant crusade against cheaters and lady-beaters loses a bit of its luster when you remember the time he texted a girl that she was a “dumb dumb” “ghetto tramp” who “appeared riddled with herpes,” and that he couldn’t invite her to one of his THREE houses cuz he’d be nervous she’d “steal shit.” The woman claimed Dominic did this because she turned him down for casual sex, Dominic claimed he did it because she was stalking him. Okie dokie!
