Mariah Carey Faces Backlash From Singers Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan Over The Trademark Rights To “Queen of Christmas”

I’m pretty sure as the holidays sneak up on us, Mariah Carey is preparing her vocal cords to belt out All I Want For Christmas Is You for the ga-jillionth time. However, this year she plans on giving herself the gift that keeps on giving; a trademark.  Recently, Mariah spoke of filing for legal rights over the term Queen of Christmas. However, two other lady singers, Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan, have also been associated with the term Queen of Christmas and they are not going to allow Mariah and her Grinch-like ways to capitalize on a term she has no direct rights to.

Variety reports after Mariah began discussing a trademark for the term Queen of Christmas, Darlene and Elizabeth spoke out on this blasphemy. Elizabeth, who has been using the term since 2014, immediately reached out to her lawyer Louis W. Trompos to challenge Mariah’s Scrooge-like greed.

Chan and her lawyer…spoke with Variety over the weekend and shared the argument they are making to the trademark trial and appeal board to stop Carey in her snow tracks.

“Christmas has come way before any of us on earth, and hopefully will be around way after any of us on earth,
says Chan. “And I feel very strongly that no one person should hold onto anything around Christmas or monopolize it in the way that Mariah seeks to in perpetuity. That’s just not the right thing to do. Christmas is for everyone. It’s meant to be shared; it’s not meant to be owned.

“And it’s not just about the music business,” Chan continues. “She’s trying to trademark this in every imaginable way — clothing, liquor products, masks, dog collars — it’s all over the map. If you knit a ‘queen of Christmas’ sweater, you should be able to sell it on Etsy to somebody else so they can buy it for their grandma. It’s crazy — it would have that breadth of registration.”

After Darlene discovered Mariah’s claim, she quickly cleared her throat to remind everyone who she is. This is THEE Darlene Love, original singer of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). She’s been using the term Queen of Christmas since it was given to her by David Letterman in 1993. She’s been a staple of the holidays for decades, and had no time to entertain any of this foolishness.

“Is it true that Mariah Carey trademarked ‘Queen of Christmas’?” wrote Love. “What does that mean, that I can’t use that title? David Letterman officially declared me the Queen of Christmas 29 years ago, a year before she released ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You,’ and at 81 years of age I’m NOT changing anything. I’ve been in the business for 52 years, have earned it and can still hit those notes! If Mariah has a problem call David or my lawyer!!”

I hope this stewing Christmas beef lasts until December, but it’s truly not a fair fight. Because there’s only one true Christmas Queen, and that’s Lucy from Charlie Brown. The fact that her name wasn’t brought up first is just plain disrespectful.
