It’s hard to believe it’s been eleven years since Amy Winehouse passed away at age 27. Her life was a tumultuous barrage of insanity that mirrored her songs, yet her music has endured and will always be considered some of the best of all time. In that respect, of course, Hollywood is turning Amy’s life story into an upcoming Mitch Winehouse-approved biopic titled Back To Black, directed and co-written by Sam Taylor-Johnson. The film is still in the developmental stages, but there are a few actresses being considered for the role. And one of them, Marisa Abela, has come out of the gate leading the pack as a frontrunner for consideration.
Complex reports that a movie about Amy’s life has been in the works for a while, although a 2015 documentary titled Amy was released to critical acclaim and eventually went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary. And honestly, for me, they could have stopped right there. However, Amy’s dad Mitch Winehouse surprisingly (sarcasm) wasn’t fond of it and he’s been waiting to get his grubby hands on a biopic of his daughter’s life for a while. At one time there was talk of Lady Gaga potentially taking on the role of Amy, but none of us need that. Now it’s being reported that Marisa is at the top of the list to play Amy.
The 25-year-old British actress, who portrays Yasmin Kara-Hanani in the London-based critical hit, also starred in Sky TV show Cobra as well as the 2022 crime thriller Rogue Agent. Later this year, Abela will star opposite Haley Bennett and Sam Riley in the drama series She Is Love.
“It’s believed Abela is in discussions, though the role isn’t yet locked in and a small group of other actors are also believed to be in the mix,” the outlet writes.
Here’s a clip of Marisa in Industry for context.
You know what…I kinda see it. Well, I see it more in Marisa than I would with Gaga. But I’ll wait for an official decision because I bet that Mitch Winehouse is really pushing for his Amy Winehouse hologram to star as Amy. That way he can collect two checks!
