The 2022 Emmy Nominations Are Out, And That’s “Emmy-Nominated Actress Jennifer Coolidge” To You!

July 12, 2022 / Posted by:

If you’re a Jennifer Coolidge fan, then this news no doubt has you craving a celebratory hot dog real bad. Because the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations were announced earlier today, and many, many first-time nominees heard their names called by Melissa Fumero and JB Smoove, who announced the nominees during today’s virtual ceremony. Like the effervescent acting powerhouse Jennifer Coolidge, who I would have assumed had already EGOT’ed at least three times by now, but surprisingly has not even come close. But she’s at least an E closer to such a distinction with her first Emmy nomination today, for her work in The White Lotus (it’s a good thing she didn’t let her pizza depression prevent her from accepting that gig). And alongside the usual suspects (Mr. Lasso and Madam Maisel), a number of records were made today too.

Much like last year, the nominating committee wasn’t able to hone down their nominations to the usual tight five that’s typical of Emmy categories. The acting categories have six nominees, and when it comes to series nominations, the categories are stacked and stuffed like a Cheesecake Factory breadbasket (with all brown bread too!). Of course Succession found itself with the most nominations (25 across the board), which was followed by Ted Lasso and The White Lotus (both with 20 nominations), and Hacks and Only Murders in the Building (both with 17 noms). Then Euphoria, a show that received the second-most drama nominations of the day (16). Several of which went to Zendaya, who made history once again. 25-year-old Zendaya is now the youngest-ever two-time acting nominee, and the youngest producer nominated (Euphoria, of which Zendaya is a producer on, was nominated for Best Drama Series).

Also in the history-making club is Quinta Brunson, who created, writes for, and stars in the Best Comedy Series-nominated Abbott Elementary. According to Variety, Quinta is the first Black woman to receive three comedy nominations in one year (Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy Series, and Writing for a Comedy Series). And according to me, history was also broken when I yelled “Yes, bitch” at the news that both Janelle James and capital-I icon Sheryl Lee Ralph both received their first nominations ever, both appearing in the category of Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series nominations for Abbott. Much like Jennifer Coolidge, I was shocked to learn that Sheryl Lee Ralph had never been nominated for an Emmy before, and clearly, she’s thrilled:

Rounding out the rest of the nominations were the not-surprising nominations for Squid Game and multi-winners Barry and Ozark. Also, the Emmy nomination committee must have also thought that the 90s cosplay was convincing enough to reclassify Pam & Tommy from a goofy Lifetime-level parody to a legitimate miniseries, because it received 10 nominations, including nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress. And to the surprise of no one, Amanda Seyfried’s insanely weird portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout got Amanda an acting nomination as well.

And if you’re the type who gets rattled and reckless about snubs, then you have multiple reasons to be mad today. Zero acting nominations for the cast of Stranger Things (just series nominations). Nothing for The Righteous Gemstones. 17 nominations for Only Murders in the Building and not one for Selena Gomez. And yes, Murray Bartlett was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor for a Limited or Anthology Series for his work on The White Lotus, but what about acknowledging the work of his best co-star, that CGI poo that he dropped in Jake Lacy’s luggage? The audacity of such a snub.

Here is a condensed list of the nominees you’ll see on Emmy night, September 12, 2022.
