Open Post: Hosted By A Vintage Clip of Julia Louis-Dreyfus Cursing In Front Of Elmo

Cursing is the great equalizer. From the lowliest pauper to the wealthiest business magnate, there’s nothing like unleashing a huge FUUUUCK to express the deepest and most complicated of your emotions. However, there is a time and place for cussin’. One of those places is not Sesame Street. Someone could’ve told Julia Louis-Dreyfus that because there’s video evidence of her letting out a quick “shit!” in front of our favorite Muppets.

Back in 1994, someone on PBS apparently believed that Sesame Street and Seinfeld had a crossover audience, so they invited Julia to guest star in an episode. It was going ok until Julia flubbed a line in front of Elmo and Zoe (she’s the one with the pet rock that Elmo has a long-standing beef with). Thankfully, it was all caught on tape so that we can enjoy it forever. via Newsweek:

Reddit user u/MulciberTenebras shared the video of Louis-Dreyfus’ slipup, which amassed more than 43,000 votes.

In the clip, she is seen speaking with Sesame Street characters, Elmo and Zoe before the cameras began rolling to get clarification on how they would approach the scene they were shooting.

The scene began, but Louis-Dreyfus said the wrong name while reciting her line. Once she realized her mistake, she let out an explicative.

“The Grump needs—s**t,” she said as she cut herself off from finishing the rest of the sentence, intending to refer to Oscar the Grouch.

Louis-Dreyfus apologized and Elmo turned and exclaimed that she “said a bad word.”

“Five dollars!” Elmo suggested as a charge for the uttered curse word, while Zoe demanded a nickel.

And here’s the moment live in technicolor:

This video resurfaces online now and again because everyone loves seeing Julia curse. She could read the phonebook (do those still exist?) and I’d watch. Throw in a sassy Muppet and I’d pay for that show! And for a 3-year-old, Elmo seems fairly familiar with curse words. I’m guessing the puppeteers could be pretty foul-mouthed. You can’t be trapped inside a Big Bird or a Snuffleupagus costume all day under those hot lights without letting out at least one expletive!
