Woody Allen Tells Alec Baldwin That He May Be Done With Making Movies

Yesterday Alec Baldwin warned us that he was planning to interview Woody Allen today on Instagram Live. And, despite a checkered past full of bullshit half-truths (“my wife is Spanish, we’re done having kids, I’m quitting Twitter!”), Alec kept his word and chatted with Woody this morning. He began the 55-minute Instagram Live by announcing that he was turning off the comments so none of his followers could chime in with their two cents. Um, good call.

For the first couple of minutes, 64-year-old Alec struggled with technical difficulties, but 86-year-old Woody managed to jump into the Live around the 2:30 mark. He joked, “I’m not sure what Instagram is.” Or maybe that’s not a joke. I didn’t stick around to find out, because I’d rather bleach my eyeballs than hear either of these blowhards blowhard. Thankfully, Variety came through with the “highlights,” including the fact that Woody announced he might be retiring after his next movie, which will shoot in Paris:

“I’ll probably make at least one more movie. A lot of the thrill is gone,” Allen said. “When I used to do a film it’d go into a movie house all across the country. Now you do a movie and you get a couple weeks in a movie house. Maybe six weeks or four weeks and then it goes right to streaming or pay-per-view…It’s not the same…It’s not as enjoyable to me.”

“I don’t get the same fun doing a movie and putting it in a theater,” Allen added. “It was a nice feeling to know that 500 people were seeing it once… I don’t know how I feel about making movies. I’m going to make another one and I’ll see how it feels.”

Sure, Woody. Alec, who has appeared in three Woody-directed films (Alice, To Rome With Love, and Blue Jasmine), avoided bringing up anything controversial, such as the allegations that Woody sexually assaulted his daughter, Dylan Farrow. This comes as no surprise since yesterday Alec said that he wasn’t interested in anyone’s “judgments,” “sanctimonious posts,” or “speculation.” He added that if we believe that “a trial should be conducted by way of an HBO documentary,” that’s our issue. Instead, Alec focussed on Woody’s books, including his much-debated memoir, Apropos of Nothing, and his latest collection of essays, If I Did It Zero Gravity.

Apparently, the technical difficulties continued well into the interview. The video stopped three times:

“Are they in a room where they have the best Wifi?” Baldwin was heard asking someone off camera after Allen dropped out of the feed for a second time. “They need to be in a room with the best Wifi in the house.”

Here’s the Live:

Was it technical difficulties that caused the Instagram Live feed to keep cutting out? Or was this an intervention from God Himself? “I command thee… shut the fuck up!”
