Normani Has Been Called Out For Appearing In A Music Video With Chris Brown

Two days ago, Chris Brown reminded us that, much like that one line of moldy shower tile grout that is forever resistant to bleach and scrubbing, he’ll truly never go away, when he released the music video for his latest song, “WE (Warm Embrace).” Chris Brown has been locked in a warm embrace with (allegedly) shitty behavior for several decades now, but since you can’t sensually shimmy up to bad PR, he needed a human stand-in for his video. And who did he choose, but former fifth harmonizer, Normani. That’s not going over well with the type of people yelling, “NOOOOrmani, why?” after seeing her accept the gig as Chris’ dance partner in the video.

This likely comes as a pretty big shock to anyone who believed that Normani’s motivations were always good and pure, like being a faithful steward to hot 90s choreography, or remaining a committed champion of velour. But alas, Normani clearly couldn’t refuse a check from one of the entertainment industry’s worst apples. Here’s the video for “WE (Warm Embrace),” which was released on Tuesday. It currently has more than 2 million views on YouTube, and I’m guessing at least 1.9 million of those came from people who had to see for themselves that it really was Normani in the video and not some Normani lookalike who just woke up from the cloning factory last week and had zero knowledge about who Chris Brown was.

Normani only features in the video as a dancer; she doesn’t lend any backing vocals to Chris Brown, who for some reason is dressed like somebody’s dad who realized that they needed to be at their kid’s high school graduation ceremony in 5 minutes. But it didn’t matter if Normani was singing or just bumping her body into Chris Brown’s for five minutes and ten seconds, the internet had a few words for Normani’s choice of music video cameos. And generally, the thoughts were not positive compliments. via The Daily Beast:

“Nobody on Normani’s team should have to tell her to not work with Chris Brown when we all had functioning brains when the abuse happened and he’s had a reputation since,” wrote one Twitter user, whose tweet has since gone viral. “It’s not about her being protected. It’s about her supporting him. Normani is grown and didn’t care, that’s it.”

Other fans also considered Normani teaming up with Brown disrespectful, given that she was the first-ever ambassador for his ex-girlfriend Rihanna’s – whom he infamously assaulted in 2009 – lingerie brand Savage X Fenty.

Another Twitter user noted that Chloe Bailey also has an upcoming collaboration with Chris Brown coming out and that Normani isn’t the only one who is out there making questionable character judgments. And, making this mess objectively worse, was the Twitter user who unearthed an old interview featuring Normani saying she could “change” Chris Brown.

Well, did Normani change him? The proof to that will in the pudding (flavor: Let’s See How Long It Takes Before Another Woman Inevitably Accuses Him Of Assaulted Caramel). I just don’t understand why so many people are lining up to collaborate with Chris Brown in the year 2022. They featured what is arguably one of his most commercially successful songs in an episode of NBC’s The Office, and that shit premiered when W was still the president. At this point, I’m shocked that Chris Brown’s agent isn’t like, “Well, here’s who we could get for the video cameo: a female-presenting Macy’s mannequin with a partially-damaged right arm, and MC Skat Kat, although we’ve really only gotten a soft yes from him.
