Open Post: Hosted By The Fight Over A Curse Word On A Tombstone

June 18, 2022 / Posted by:

Tombstones are a fairly permanent way to memorialize someone’s life. Typically, they’ll have kind words etched into the marble. Phrases like, “Wonderful father,” “Beloved grandmother,” or “Cherished mom.” However, a headstone in Iowa decided to do away with the traditional and include a big FUCK into the dearly departed’s message. With the way things in the world have been going, my tombstone is probably going to include a string of expletives, so I support the message of this grave!

While it’s a pretty amusing word to incorporate into a long-lasting memorial, the local community members aren’t finding the humor in it. via UPI:

The headstone message reads: “Forever in our hearts, until we meet again, cherished memories, known as our son, brother, father, papa, uncle, friend & cousin.”

The formatting of the type causes the first letter of each line to spell out the message “[expletive] off.”

“It was a term of endearment,” Owens’ daughter told WHO-TV, “If he said that to you, it meant he liked you. If he didn’t like you, he didn’t talk to you.”

The Camp Township Board of Trustees said officials rejected the headstone, but the family had it installed anyway.

The board said in a statement that it does not allow profanity on gravestones because “those others who have a place in the cemetery have the right of decency afforded to them.”

A hidden FUCK on the gravestone as a “fuck you” to the board? The Owens family are some bold bitches! They’re going to need to keep that feisty spirit up because the community members are planning to take legal action, saying they “will not stop” until the headstone is gone. I understand the sentiment from the community, but if the expletive was concealed and was one of Mr. Owens’s favorite words, then maybe it’s not so bad. But what do I know? I’m an uncouth Neanderthal who thinks four-letter words are funny! However, I do believe that the board could take a page from how some communities handle expletives at funerals:

Now that’s how you say goodbye! This is your friendly reminder to hold your close ones tight and tell them that you fucking love them!
