Drake Dropped A Surprise Album At Midnight

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from Canada’s tackiest homeowner Drake. What has Drake been up to? Well, if he’s been the sensitive sad boy sobbing over the latest developments in Rihanna’s life, you wouldn’t know it. Because Drake clearly hasn’t had enough spare time to sit night after night, wrapped in his custom-made Raptors-branded fleece weighted blanket in his feelings room (I assume one of his expensive mansions has such a thing). In between his time spent trolling his trolls, Drake has been busy making an album, which he dropped by semi-surprise last night.

Yesterday, Drake posted a picture of his seventh studio album, titled Honestly, Nevermind. Instagram is also where he announced that he’d be dropping it for your listening pleasure at the stroke of twelve. Kind of like a Cinderella situation, except instead of turning back into a pumpkin at midnight, Drake once again turns into a potential source of drama when fans start going over every single lyric for clues about who he might be feuding with currently.

Complex notes that Drake’s album really was a bit of a surprise. Because we live in a world where some artists have been dragging their feet for years on releasing a follow-up album to their last release (I won’t name names, it’s bad karma at this point). But Drake? Drake literally just released his sixth album, Certified Lover Boy, just nine months ago. But that might also be a clever callback to that album, the cover art of which featured 12 pregnant emoji people. And, Drake loves calling himself Papi, so maybe he put a rush on things so that he could get that album into people’s ears in time for Father’s Day this Sunday.

Or maybe he just had a ton of feelings he needed to get off his chest. After the album hit the internet, Drake Instagrammed a picture of the track listing from the back of the album. Unlike the cover, that track listing doesn’t look like it was thrown together for $100 and a tall can of Monster Super Dry by a roadie named Whyplash. No, the graphic design for the track listing looks like if Whyplash suddenly went to therapy and subsequently went emo. Although the song titles reflect neither vibe. “Calling My Name“? “Flight’s Booked“? “Texts Go Green”? That kind of nice guy desperation is pure Drake.

Drake also released a nearly ten-minute-long video for Falling Back, where he pulls some Sister Wives shit by having a mass wedding. Tristan Thompson makes a cameo:

As for the internet’s reaction to Drake’s album, people are underwhelmed. “Honestly, nevermind” might be the most common phrase uttered when a friend asks if the new Drake is worth downloading.

Drake withdrew his 2022 Grammy nominations for Certified Lover Boy in protest of the Recording Academy. If someone is feeling especially petty at the Recording Academy today, they might send Drake a text that reads, “Honestly, nevermind about typing up a statement about withdrawing your nominations for next year – there might not be any.
