Halsey Has Been Sued By A Former Nanny For Discrimination And Illegal Termination, But Halsey Says It’s Not Like That

Typically when it comes to entertainment industry nanny drama, the odds are 2:1 that a story might involve some famous husband getting caught in an unsavory position with the person hired to help take care of his kids (aka the classic Whoopsies, I’m Getting Divorced Because I Have Zero Boundaries scenario). Sometimes it’s not as juicy and gossip-laden as that. In this case, we have Halsey, who is currently in the middle of a legal fight with a former nanny. Except, this nanny drama is still pretty dramatic, because both sides are accusing each other of bad behavior.

A little under a year ago, Halsey, whose real name is Ashley Frangipane, and their boyfriend Alev Aydin welcomed a son. Halsey and Alev named the little boy Ender Ridley Aydin. Halsey hired a nanny to help take care of Ender, but things might have started to go badly almost right away if the details in a recent lawsuit is telling the truth. The nanny, Ashley Funches, might have the word “fun” in her last name, but according to her lawsuit, it wasn’t very fun working for Halsey. via The Blast:

The woman says she was paid by “Halsey Music” every two weeks based on an annual salary. She says the job included “caring for the child, preparing meals, cleaning, laundry, cleaning breast pump materials, organizing the nursery, and running errands as needed.” The nanny claims that during the weeks to follow she “worked around the clock” on consecutive days with “little to no day of rest.”

When Ashley spoke up about all the overtime she was allegedly working, she claims that she was given $5000. The only problem is, it wasn’t clear what the money was in compensation of. So Ashley has established that it wasn’t the healthiest work environment for her. But in March 2022, that’s when the baby poo really hit the fan. Ashley claims in the lawsuit that she informed Halsey that a leave of absence was needed for a medical procedure and that she would be absent for a few days after. Well, a few days after Ashley submitted that notice, she was fired.

Now, the nanny is saying the firing was in retaliation for complaining about the overtime wages and “violation of law” based on her disability and inability to work. “As a direct and proximate cause of the aforementioned violations, (the nanny) has suffered, and continues to suffer, substantial losses related to the use and enjoyment of such wages and lost interest in such wages.”

Ashley is seeking an unspecified amount of damages.

So from Ashley’s side of things, she allegedly worked overtime for months, only to find her ass out on the street after requiring some time off for a medical procedure. But according to Halsey, that’s not the truth. A rep for Halsey reached out to TMZ, and they say that Halsey acknowledges that Ashley was fired, but that it was totally justifiable because she was allegedly drinking on the job. via TMZ:

A rep for Halsey tells TMZ … “These allegations are baseless. This individual’s employment was recently terminated in response to specific incidents in which Halsey’s infant was left unsupervised in an unsafe location while under the nanny’s care, and it was discovered the nanny was intoxicated while the child was in her care.”

Halsey’s rep adds that at no point were any complaints brought to Halsey about the nanny’s working conditions. Additionally, Halsey wanted to speak up and speak out against the nanny’s allegations, because Halsey takes ableism and ethical working conditions very seriously.

TMZ notes that this lawsuit is still in the beginning phases, which I believe the technical legal term for is “they said/they said.” But it’s pretty clear that both sides have very strong ideas of what the truth of this termination is. Halsey especially. If they’re telling the truth, then that nanny broke the first rule from Nanny McPhee’s guidebook, which is that you save the boozing for after the baby hits the crib for the night. Especially if that baby belongs to Halsey. Halsey can’t be worrying if their nanny is sober or not. She’s very busy – they’ve got mandatory TikToks to make.
