Matthew Morrison Has Spoken One Again About His Exit From “So You Think You Can Dance,” And He Says It’s Not What It Looks Like

About a week ago, Matthew Morrison announced that he was no longer a judge on the 17th season of So You Think You Can Dance because he broke “production protocols.” That was quickly followed by sources claiming that Matthew got canned for sending flirty DMs to one of the female contestants. That wasn’t such a great look for Matthew, who has been married to Renee Puente since 2014. Which may be why Matthew has decided to say more about leaving his chair on SYTYCD. This time, with a little extra spin. No, not an actual spin – although that would make sense for a dancing competition show. Spin, like damage control.

According to sources, the unnamed female contestant didn’t ever meet up with Matthew Morrison and it didn’t escalate any farther than just “flirty” DMs, and, that she was the one to report what was going on. Matthew hopped on Instagram yesterday, and decided to be his own Oprah Winfrey by telling his truth. And the truth, according to Matthew, is that he’s only guilty of sending one innocent little message. via Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s really unfortunate that I have to sit here and defend myself and my family against blatantly untrue statements made anonymously,” Morrison said in the video. “But I have nothing to hide. So, in the interest of transparency I will read to you the one message I wrote to a dancer on the show.”

According to Morrison, he wrote: “Hey! It’s Matthew. If you don’t mind, would love to get your number and talk you through some things.”

That sounds like Matthew was trying to get a contestant’s number, which…yeah, that doesn’t look good in the eyes of the general public, or let’s say, they eyes of any woman who might be married to Matthew Morrison. But Matthew adds that the only reason he wanted to chat with said contestant is because they both shared a “mutual respect” for a choreographer that Matthew has known for 20 years. And the reason he wanted to move the conversation from DMs to the phone, is because he wanted to get the choreographer a job on the show. Oh yeah, that makes total sense! Everyone knows that most amateur dancers are also part-time casting directors or talent agents.

He ended the video by accusing everyone of being sad, nosy little gossip-mongers who have nothing better to do than to speculate on why a married man like Matthew Morrison might be sliding into the DMs of a female contestant on his dance competition show. That’s the story here, not the story about Matthew asking for digits in the DMs.

“We live in this world where gossip rules and people’s lives are being thrown around as clickbait. I think this is much bigger than me and this story. Gossip is toxic, and it is destroying our society, and we need to do better.”

I know Matthew wants us all to stop speculating on what happened here, in the interest of doing “better,” but I really want to know how the So You Think You Can Dance choreographers feel about Matthew’s video. Because that show already has choreographers! Something tells me Matthew is about to be the one on the receiving end of an unsolicited DM, with several show choreographers jumping into a group chat to ask, “So who were you looking to replace? Be specific. Or would you rather get our numbers and turn this into a conference call.
