While many of us in the United States were preparing to gorge ourselves on burnt hot dogs and dry hamburgers over the long holiday weekend, over in Paris, it was Cream Pie day, and not in a fun way either. While many were visiting the Lourve to take in all of the artistic delights, someone cosplaying as a tourist in a wheelchair decided it was time to shake things up by throwing a dessert in the Mona Lisa‘s face like it was a scene from an episode of Tom and Jerry. But the joke’s on that cake thrower because the Mona Lisa is protected by glass.

According to AP News, on Sunday afternoon, onlookers watched in sheer horror (or hilarity depending on their level of maturity) as an unidentified person dressed in Whistler’s Mother drag rolled up in a wheelchair and then performed the miracle of rising to their feet before throwing a cream pie at Leonardo da Vinci’s creation. Luckily, the painting is behind protective glass so no real harm was done. However, it caused a commotion as people tried to make sense of what the entire fuck had just happened.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said Monday that the 36-year-old man was detained following Sunday’s incident and sent to a police psychiatric unit. An investigation has been opened into the damage of cultural artifacts.

Videos posted on social media showed a young man in a wig and lipstick who had arrived in a wheelchair. The man, whose identity was unknown, was also seen throwing roses in the museum gallery to slack-jawed guests.

As for why the cake thrower did Mona Lisa like that, he shouted about saving planet earth before he was taken away. via CNN:

The man, 36, was arrested and taken to a psychiatric infirmary in the police headquarters, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. An investigation has been opened by the prosecutor for “the attempt of damaging a cultural property.” The Louvre has filed a complaint.
In a video published by a museum-goer on Twitter, the man is heard saying in French, “Think of planet Earth, there are people destroying it,” while security escorts the man, with rose petals scattered on the floor of the museum.

And of course, people had jokes:

Even IKEA got in on the joke by using the incident to sell units of their sandpaper rough napkins.

I think we all can agree Leonardo da Vinci was definitely a psychic because he knew this day would come. Now everyone can fully understand that smirk on Mona Lisa’s face is her awaiting this day and thinking to herself as he got carted away to the police psych ward “You tried it bitch, but not today!”
