Um, the last time I checked, it seemed like Morgan Wallen and Travis Scott were doing a pretty good job of getting un-cancelled on their own. Previous public N-word user Morgan Wallen began crawling his way out of the cancel hole after he won Album of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in March. Travis Scott has been staging his “comeback” after 10 people died at his Astroworldshow, and he became the recipient of numerous lawsuits, including his latest lawsuit from a woman who says that her injuries during the trampling led to her miscarrying her child.
But in Diddy’s mind, these two poor young misunderstood souls are laboring under the weight of their permanent status as societal pariahs. So Diddy wants to play Captain Save-A-Cancelled-Ho for Morgan and Travis, and he’s doing whatever he can to re-integrate them back into showbiz. Even though they both have kind of already done that themselves.
Since there’s truly no such thing as being “cancelled,” both Morgan and Travis appeared to be doing a-ok. And they’re only going to get better, thanks to their guardian angel, Diddy. Diddy, who is the host and executive producer of this year’s Billboard Music Awards, recently spoke to Billboard about his new pet project and says that Morgan and Travis will be performing at the show because they deserve a second chance. Just call it Making the Un-Banned, I guess? via Billboard:
The mood of the show is about love and forgiveness. As a musical family, none of us are saints; none of us are without things that happen to them in life. So one of the things I’m doing directly is un-canceling the canceled. That’s breaking news because people haven’t been about uncanceling. But canceling is a trend that needs to stop.
Travis went through a tragedy; Morgan [used the N-word] while talking to his boy. People make mistakes. Now we’re moving on with love and respect for everybody that was hurt or affected. It’s time to forgive. To have Morgan and Travis be able to come back and touch the stage again with the mindset of getting a second chance at life. Everybody in the room is getting a second chance at life, you know, because we’re back outside with no masks on. We need love and I’m excited about celebrating that.
This elephant-in-the-room addressing was made after Diddy threw up a promo for the Billboard Music Awards on Instagram, in which a shortlist of performers was rattled off, and Morgan’s name just so happened to be one of them. Clearly, more than one person saw Morgan’s name in that shortlist of mostly Black performers and thought, “Uh Diddy, are you sure that’s the Morgan you want there?“. But yes, that’s the Morgan. Poor Morgan deserves to shine in the spotlight once again!…according to Diddy.
Diddy isn’t the first to act as Travis’ unofficial agent and try to get Travis some work. Kanye West was scheduled to headline Coachella this year but dropped out at the last minute. When Kanye was still in headliner mode, he was adamant that Travis Scott join him on stage. However, unlike Travis, Morgan hasn’t had such a high-profile cheerleader in his corner as Diddy. So Morgan is likely writing Diddy a very enthusiastic Thank You note as we speak. Just, if anyone close to Morgan is able, maybe try to proofread that note first. Just a quick scan to make sure Morgan doesn’t get too comfortable again and throws around the word that got him “cancelled” in the first place.
