Last week Drew Barrymore had Anthony Anderson on The Drew Barrymore Show. During their interview, the topic jumped to the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial. An excited Drew called it “a seven-layer dip of insanity.” Anthony said that it was “truly amazing” to sit back and read the transcripts, and Drew admitted she pores over the details every night in bed. Drew laughed, Anthony laughed, the audience laughed, laugh, laugh, laugh. But guess who wasn’t laughing? Those who want #JusticeForJohnnyDepp.
Apparently, Drew faced backlash from some of her viewers (or anyone who came across the interview clip online). Her critics claimed she was making light of domestic abuse. Drew and Anthony mostly laughed about how crazy the details of the trial are. Anthony joked, “He [Johnny] lost a fingertip! He drew his name in blood on the wall!” And Drew was dumbfounded by Johnny’s texts about wanting Amber’s body to rot in a Honda Civic, and said, “You know the next day, at Honda, they all came into the office, and they were like, ‘Why did he pick us?'” She added:
“It’s so fascinating. I know that these are two peoples’ real lives, and I know what it’s like to have your life to be put out in public. I understand all the feelings, but they are actually offering up this information that nobody had to know. This is crazy!”
Here’s the clip of Drew and Anthony talking about the trial, which one TikTokker has titled “DREW BARRYMORE LAUGHS AT JOHNNY DEPP’S PAIN”:
Yesterday Drew posted a video to Instagram apologizing for her comments. She said, via Variety:
“It has come to my attention that I have offended people with making light of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and for that I just want to deeply apologize and appreciate everyone who spoke out because this can be a teachable moment for me and how I move forward and how I conduct myself.”
“All I want to do is be a good person,” Barrymore added. “I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person and I very much appreciate the depth of this and I will grow and change from it…And I thank everyone helping me grow along the way and teaching me. Thank you.”
Here’s the video apology, which is maybe the hardest Drew Barrymore has ever Drew Barrymored (see: clutching her heart, the signature lisp):
My question is, why did all these Johnny fans come for Drew Barrymore, but ignore Anthony’s comments? Especially since he has a history of sexual assault accusations. If Drew should apologize, so should Anthony. He’s the one that said, “This needs to be on TV!” Ugh, don’t give Ryan Murphy any ideas!
