In The Wake Of Elon Musk’s $43 Million Twitter Purchase, Jameela Jamil Has Quit Twitter

Some famous and non-famous people heard the news that cringey billionaire Elon Musk bought Twitter for $43 billion, and they responded by threatening to pack up their 140 characters and their expertly-edited profile pictures and quit Twitter for good. Some actually went ahead and followed through with their promise. Like Jameela Jamil, who will no longer be chiming in with her unsolicited two cents on everything on Twitter, because she’s officially done with the bird app.
Elon has claimed that Twitter needs a revamp and that he’s a big believer in a platform that celebrates and encourages free speech. That remains to be seen, by which I mean we’ll have to see how many unflattering pictures of Elon Musk remain on Twitter in the coming weeks. But Jameela Jamil clearly doesn’t want to stick around and wait to see what happens with TwitterX or whatever astonishingly uncreative new title Elon re-names it with. After the deal was confirmed, Jameela tweeted her final tweet (for now, at least), and explained that she’s got a sinking feeling that Elon’s quest for “free speech” is going to turn Twitter into a hate-filled hellscape. I mean, this is different from the current state of Twitter how?
One good thing about Elon buying twitter is that I will *FINALLY* leave and stop being a complete menace to society on here. So itβs win win for you all really. π

Ah he got twitter. I would like this to be my what lies here as my last tweet. Just really *any* excuse to show pics of Barold. I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck. β€οΈ pic.twitter.com/fBDOuEYI3e

Jameela made sure to post her final tweet on Instagram – you know, the other app owned by a guy who has been accused of turning a social media platform into a hate-filled hellscape. And in her post, she explained further that her final tweet received plenty of angry messages, including some death threats, all because she believes there’s a difference between free speech and a potential free-for-all of hate speech.
But USA Today notes that Jameela is far from the only blue check type to have reservations about Elon’s purchase. Director Rob Reiner tweeted that he was concerned Elon’s quest for free speech was going to end up with former President and Twitter menace Donald Trump returning to the platform to spew more hate and misinformation. Ice-T joked that Elon Musk should do everyone a favor and just shut the whole app down. Ellie Goulding encouraged everyone to ignore the “drama” of Elon’s purchase, and instead focus on the constant threat of climate collapse. Simu Liu questioned if there wasn’t something better that Elon could have blown $43 billion on. And Questlove implied he might leave and begin enjoying life again before he joined Twitter in 2004.
There is a chance that nothing much will change with Elon at the helm of Twitter’s ship, so we’ll see if Jameela eventually decides to return. In the meantime, I wonder how she’ll adjust without Twitter? It was truly her favorite platform for jumping into conversations that don’t concern her and attempting to become that conversation’s main character. There’s always Instagram, of course. But it’s just not the same. Poor Jameela is going to have to start hanging around the aisles of Target, waiting for a conversation that she can jump into. And then eventually Target will have to start putting up signage that reads: Warning – at any given time your conversation might be hijacked by a casually loitering Jameela Jamil.
