Chris Rock’s Mom Has Something To Say About Will Smith’s Oscar Slap

There was a time when it felt like everyone and their mother was chiming in with their thoughts on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in the face during the presentation of the award for Best Feature Documentary at last month’s Academy Awards. And well, now we finally have Chris Rock’s actual mother with her thoughts on the matter. The slapee’s mom has joined the never-ending discourse, and do I even need to tell you that she’s Team Chris? Although I guess the show Everybody Hates Chris would have made exponentially more sense had his own mother come out and been like, “Good for Will, I would have slapped him too.” But of course, that’s not what happened.

Chris Rock’s mom Rosalie Rock is a motivational speaker, and she was asked about the incident during a recent interview with NBC’s WIS-10. Rosalie admits that, like many of us watching from home, she thought the bit was staged at first. But once it became very apparent that it wasn’t, her tone changed and she really didn’t like what she saw. And Rosalie didn’t hold back in verbally slapping Will Smith over his choice to get up on stage and put a hand to her son’s face. Also, the narrative around the Oscars shouldn’t be “Will Smith slapped Chris Rock,” but “Will Smith slapped Chris Rock and septuagenarian woman,” because according to Rosalie, that’s what it felt like. via Yahoo! News:

“You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye, and you went and made her day because she was mulled over laughing when it happened.” Rose added that, like many, she was watching the Oscars at home and initially thought the moment was staged. However, when Smith began to use “obscenities,” she knew it was real, stating, “When he slapped Chris, he slapped all of us. He really slapped me.”

Rosalie added that the slap took away Questlove’s chance at a meaningful acceptance speech after he won the award for Best Feature Documentary (he was given ample time and did deliver a speech, but Rosalie just means that the vibe was off and everyone’s mind was elsewhere in the moment). And, after it was all over, and Rosalie applied enough metaphorical ice to her jaw to soothe the phantom slap pains she endured, she contacted her son Chris, and told him how proud she was of how he reacted to the slap. As you may recall, Chris Rock responded to Will’s slap with shock as he attempted to move on and read whatever the Academy Awards writing room had prepared for him on the teleprompter. As for where Will is at right now, Rosalie wishes Will had offered up a sincere private apology to Chris Rock, as opposed to the apology he posted to his Instagram account. However, Rosalie also doesn’t believe in taking back Will Smith’s Best Actor Award, or the talk about having him ejected from the ceremony. But on that note, where is Will right now? Will Smith is currently in India. via People magazine:

The actor, 53, made his first appearance since slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards late last month at a private airport in India over the weekend. The King Richard star even took a moment to pose for pictures with a few fans, including one airport security guard.

A source tells People that Will is in India for a spiritual retreat, where he’ll practice yoga and meditation. So this is kind of like Will Smith’s own self-healing version of the Eat, Pray, Love journey. Except, in this case, it’s Stretch, Meditate, Lengthy Damage Control Campaign.
