Thandiwe Newton Has Left “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” Denies She Was Fired Over A Fight With Channing Tatum About The Oscars Slap
Some fuckery is afoot on the set of Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the Magic Mike sequel, which is currently filming in London with Thandiwe Newton as the romantic lead opposite Channing Tatum. According to Variety, Thandiwe suddenly decided to step down, and Salma Hayek will be taking her place. The Sun reported that Thandiwe was fired by Channing, who is also a producer, after they got into it on set over The Slap at the Oscars of all things, causing the situation between them to become “untenable.” I know Will Smith really put his back into slapping Chris Rock, but damn, I cannot believe that shit is still echoing all the way across the pond! However, The Independent reports that Thandiwe denies The Sun’s report, and, in a statement, said she “made the difficult decision to step away” to “deal with family matters.” Sounds fishy, to be sure. But whatever the case, I’m sure the MM3 costume department took a look at the news circling the water cooler this morning and muttered “we’re gonna need a bigger bra.”
Magic Mike’s Last Dance is being directed by original Magical Michael director Steven Soderbergh exclusively for HBO Max. And according to The Independent, Thandiwe’s last dance came 11 days into filming.
Thandiwe Newton has denied a report claiming she was dropped from Magic Mike 3 after rowing with Channing Tatum.
The actor was set to appear in the new film, titled Magic Mike’s Last Dance, but exited the project after 11 days.
“Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters,” a Warner Bros spokesperson said on Wednesday (14 April).
The spokesperson has now also called reports of a feud with Tatum, who not only stars in, but produces the film, “completely inaccurate”.
According to The Sun, a “vicious” row broke out on the film’s London set over the incident that saw Will Smith slap Chris Rock at the Oscars on 27 March.
The Sun’s reporting didn’t offer any information as to what exactly was supposedly said, but given that Channing’s girlfriend Zoë Kravitz has indicated that she’s team Slap Bad, one might conclude that Thandiwe is team Slap Earned. Or maybe one or the other of them was going around set poling everybody, and the other SNAPPED! I wouldn’t blame either of them if that was the case. Doesn’t look all that heated to me. We’ve all seen a man slapped on national TV, this is child’s play compared to that! Besides, I’ve made that face before. Thandiwe simply appears to be asking Channing if she can hold $20. According to The Sun:
“People looked at each other and thought, ‘Wait, we’re supposed to be filming’.” The source added: “After the row he just went, ‘I am not working with her anymore’. Him being a producer, it’s his movie, so she’s off the movie.
“She’s gone. Everything we’ve shot for the last 11 days has to be reshot with a new cast member.”
The source said of director Steven Soderbergh: “He didn’t take a side. “He was trying to calm things down but he’s a very quiet man.”
Well, that also sounds fishy, so who knows. This is the second stumbling block for MM3 (and don’t get me started on Warner Bros!). Channing himself almost didn’t sign on to do it, even after production had begun, because, unlike Marky Mark, his body is a temple. Channing didn’t want to starve himself or do the extreme workouts required to get into MM shape. And in this one, he has to drop from the sky like Spider-Man. Variety reports:
“It’s really about a woman stuck at a horrible strip show like a Chippendales and then realizing, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’” Carolin said at the time. “And then Magic Mike comes down from the ceiling. She gets to go down the rabbit hole and asks: What do I really want?”
Tatum added that the character is “really strong, almost stronger than Mike … we’ve never done a traditional love story, and this isn’t a traditional love story.”
That’s right because now it’s a love story between a man with abs and a woman with luscious chichis just trying to make it in this crazy world without being asked their opinion on The Slap!
