THE QUEEN Is Taking Easter Off So Prince Charles And Duchess Camilla Are Stepping In

THE QUEEN’s activities have been under the microscope for the last few years. With her age, the loss of her husband, and the general messiness of the royal family (at this stage, there’s too many incidents to count), people have been wondering how she’s managing to keep it all together. Her secret? Skipping all the royal events! THE QUEEN has essentially said “Peace out, bitches” when it comes to public functions and her latest NON-appearance is at this year’s Royal Maundy Service. But guess who’ll be showing up? Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla! It’s like when you order a filet mignon and throw a sloppy joe in your face.
When it comes to events, THE QUEEN has opted to do virtual conferences (she’s a big fan of Zoom). However, she recently surprised audiences by physically attending a Service of Thanksgiving for Prince Philip. She even brought the adorable Prince Andrew which was a delightful bonus! So there were high hopes for her joining this year’s pre-Easter event, but apparently she’d prefer to stay home and eat a Dairy Milk Easter egg. via People:
Queen Elizabeth will miss a pre-Easter tradition.
The palace announced Friday that the monarch, 95, will miss the Royal Maundy Service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on April 14. Taking place the Thursday ahead of Easter each year, the Queen distributes specially-minted coins known as Maundy money to recognize people over 70 years old for their service to their communities.
Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall will attend in the Queen’s place, with Charles distributing the Maundy money.
Although Queen Elizabeth has continued to undertake light duties and hold virtual audiences from Windsor Castle, her public outings have grown increasingly rare amid a number of health setbacks.
A royal source tells PEOPLE, “It is with regret that she isn’t attending.”
The source adds that the Queen couldn’t commit to attending but knew the order of service was being printed and “was keen that the service was confirmed and all the recipients were aware so as to avoid any misunderstanding or overshadowing of the event on the day.”
Due to the coronavirus, the last two years’ services were canceled. However, THE QUEEN still made the effort to send the recipients a letter and Maundy gifts. Now that the pandemic is over (?), services are back in action. THE QUEEN has missed the event before, but this is the first time that Prince Charles and Camilla will be taking over. In FACT, this is the first time Camilla has even attended the Royal Maundy, so the Duchess’s climb to the top has certainly been fast tracked. Back in February, THE QUEEN mentioned that she’d really like for Camilla to be known as Queen Consort, so one could read this handing over of duties as THE QUEEN’s blessing to her successors! Or maybe she just wants to paint some eggs in peace.
Charles and Camilla’s big moment involves distributing Maundy money (think fancier HSN collectible coins) to pensioners for their service to the community. Imagine being one of these 70-year-olds and instead of meeting THE QUEEN like you thought, you get Prince Charles and Camilla. “I made it 70 for this?!”
