“RuPaul’s Drag Race” Has Increased Its Grand Prize To $150,000

Start your engines, and may the saltiest former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant win! Vh1 seems to have found some money hanging around in the bottom of its purse because Drag Race just got a big boost to its prize money. The grand prize used to be ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOOLAHS! Now the winner of its current season, season 14, will get $150,000 and the runner-up will get more than just some really good tour merch sales–they’ll also receive $50,000. New wigs for everyone!

When RPDR started in 2009 the prize money that winner BeBe Zahara Benet went home with was a measly $20,000. BUT!  She also got $5,000 worth of MAC Cosmetics. Variety says that the finale of the current season will air on April 22, and during the finale, the winning queen will get the biggest cash prize to date and the runner-up will get a nice stack of cash stuffed into her Boobs4Queens rubber cleavage.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 14 will crown America’s next drag superstar on April 22 when the finale airs on VH1. With that, the winning queen will also receive a cash prize of $150,000, the highest amount awarded to date. Additionally, for the first time in the history of drag race, the runner-up will also receive $50,000 cash prize, powered by Cash App.

The latest episode airing April 8 will see the queens play catty supermodels battling for the spotlight in the music video for RuPaul’s new hit song, “Catwalk.” Michelle Visage, Ross Mathews, and Carson Kressley all return to serve as judges.

The queens left in the running are Angeria Paris VanMicheals, Bosco, Willow Pill, Lady Camden, and Daya Betty.

This boost in prize money makes sense since the Drag Race franchise has probably made more money for RuPaul than the fracking at this point, I’m sure. There are also so many international versions including Spain, UK, Thailand, Canada, Sweden, France, Italy, and the Philippines. Not to mention All-Stars and more.

Drag Race contestants from the past chimed in about this news:

This news will make the next season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK very interesting since the winning queen of that show only gets a crown and a trip to Hollywood to film their own digital series. So when the winner of series 4 is crowned, she’ll probably look at Ru like, “Um, you give $150,000 to the Yanks, so you can at least reimburse me for my Tube fare.
