Jena Malone Helped Perform A Citizen’s Arrest On A Man Who Was Abusing A Dog

Jena Malone, star of my childhood (Stepmom, Donnie Darko, and Saved!) and the Hunger Games movies, found herself involved in some real-life drama on Monday. Jena was driving in Los Angeles when she saw a man abusing a small dog. She later tweeted that he was kicking the poor pup and “yanking him up in the air and absolutely choking” him. Jena yelled at the guy to stop, but he wouldn’t. So she jumped out of her car and began chasing his ass!
Jena tweets that she was soon joined in her chase by several men, so she decided to stop running “as I have no business trying to restrain a full grown man.” She went back to her car and drove in the direction the men had run. Six blocks away, a big group had gathered and several of the men were brawling with the dog abuser. He had been separated from the pooch, but Jena says she was later told that “the man did not give up the dog without a fight.” She pulled over, got ahold of the poor doggo, and waited with him until the cops came. Jena writes that “the dog was covered in filth and looked like it had been not taken care of for months.” Once a cop took the dog to the hospital, it was discovered that the sweet pup had “a fractured rib, bone breaks in its hind legs, and another fracture in its right paw.”
Here is Jena’s full account on Twitter:
This was really scary. I saw a man kicking repeatedly a small dog on the sunset, yanking him up in the air and absolutely choking the dog. I yelled at him to stop from my car but he wouldn’t. I got out of my car to try and get the dog but he started running. ( thread) https://t.co/3ftY18M3Ap

So I started chasing him. I saw other people watching on the street upset , as they must have seen the same abhorrent behavior I witnessed , so I tried to signal a man in an orange vest to run with me to chase him. https://t.co/3ftY194cOx

Cause at that point I really didn’t think I was going to be able to get the dog back by myself. After another block of chasing him down I looked back and there were 5 other men behind me pursuing him. Which felt like a miracle. https://t.co/3ftY18M3Ap

So at this point I held back and let them take the lead as I have no business trying to restrain a full grown man. I went back to get my car( it was still running ) and drove to see if they caught him. https://t.co/3ftY18M3Ap

6 blocks down from where the chase began a big group had gathered and it look like the man no longer had the dog. So I pulled over to make sure that dog was going to be cared for. I didn’t see the brawl but I was told that the man did not give up the dog without a fight. https://t.co/3ftY18M3Ap

and this is the tail end of a heated fight that ensued. The cops came and took the guy. I waited with dog til another cop came to take them to the hospital. The dog was covered in filth and looked like it had been not taken care of for months https://t.co/3ftY18M3Ap

I’m sorry that it ended in a brawl but the dog was going to die. No question. I can’t imagine the level of torture it had suffered until this point. And now it’s safe in a hospital. Still no word on its owner. https://t.co/3ftY18M3Ap

Here is a news report of the incident, including statements from Jena and other witnesses, actual footage of the brawl (which continued after the dog was rescued), and the man being arrested by the cops for animal cruelty:
Jena later provided another (happier) update on her Twitter; the dog was chipped and his real owner had been found! The lil’ baby’s name is Champion and his momma is Kelly McKinney, a woman who runs a food bank and donations center for the underprivileged. Poor Champion had been missing five days before the big chase. He will need multiple surgeries for his injuries, but vets are optimistic that he’ll make a full recovery over the next few weeks. There’s more information about Champ and Kelly on his GoFundMe page:

What a terrifying situation! Thank the doggie heavens that little Champ is on the mend. He’s probably still in shock; from his horrible five days and the fact that he was saved by the girl who played young Jodie Foster in Contact.
