The Weeknd And Swedish House Mafia Will Replace Kanye West As Coachella Headliners

After Kanye West dropped out as headliner of this year’s Coachella music festival, many names were rumored to be taking his spot from Silk Sonic to Red Hot Chili Peppers to Justin Bieber to Tyler, The Creator to The Weeknd. But now it’s confirmed that The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia will take Kanye’s place.

When it was announced that Kanye wanted to perform at this year’s Coachella about as much as Kanye would want to have a pleasant and friendly dinner with Pete Davidson, people began wondering who would step in and headline his slots on Sunday, April 17, and 24. Yesterday it was reported that Goldenvoice was in talks with Justin Bieber, Silk Sonic, and Tyler, The Creator. TMZ later reported that Silk Sonic’s name was off the table because Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak decided that less than two weeks wasn’t enough time to put together a showstopping performance (probably couldn’t source the burgundy sofas in time). TMZ claimed that the final decision was down to The Weeknd, with special guests Swedish House Mafia, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both were believed to be serious contenders for the spot, according to sources. But there will be no sport sock-covered penises on stage next weekend. Coachella went ahead and confirmed that they went with The Weeknd and SHM.

TMZ notes that talks with The Weeknd stalled at one point in time, but that Coachella was determined to have him take the stage in any capacity, even a little pop-in appearance. But well, they don’t have to stress about that anymore. Because The Weeknd will be on stage as a confirmed headliner. As for the choice to have him co-headline with SHM, that makes sense, considering they all worked together on the dance track “Moth to a Flame,” from an extended version of The Weeknd’s album Dawn FM. The Weeknd is also about to embark on the After Hours til Dawn Stadium Tour in July, and his opening act for all 19 shows is Doja Cat, seen just below his name on that Coachella poster.

The Weeknd confirmed the news himself on Instagram and Twitter, although he didn’t say much else about performing at Coachella this year. All I know is that he’s got a lot of work ahead of him. And I’m not talking about how he’s going to throw together a headliner-worthy show in just over 10 days. He’s got to figure out a way that he can wear all those goofy old man prosthetics in that hot Coachella Valley heat! The spirit gum and rubber wrinkles will be melting off before he finishes the chorus on “Can’t Feel My Face.
