Open Post: Hosted By The Trailer For “The Staircase” Starring Toni Colette And Colin Firth

Last year, Mare of Easttown made Kate Winslet the undisputed dahhhling of the HBO Max season (though White LotusJennifer Coolidge was a close 2nd) but since it takes HBO a million years (or approximately 3 GOT dragon lifetimes) to crank out a new season of appointment television, there’s an opening for Toni Collette to nab the title this year. Variety reports that Toni will be starring opposite Colin Firth in The Staircase, a limited series based on the Netflix documentary of the same name. That is unless Nicole Kidman’s wig from The Undoing will be playing the possibly murderous owl, in which case, all bets are off. Nic is such a powerful performer, that even her leftover hairpieces masked in “bird face,” are put forward For Your Consideration. For those of you who haven’t seen the Netflix documentary and think I’ve totally lost my marbles, I’m referencing the “owl theory,” which I’ll explain later. Right after I’m done looking for my marbles. I know I put them somewhere…

According to Variety:

The series is based on the true story of Kathleen Peterson, who in 2001 was reported dead by her husband Michael after having fallen down the stairs of their home. Michael was soon charged with her murder, leading to a court case that drew headlines and revealed secrets about the couple’s relationship. The story received renewed interest in 2018, when Netflix released the documentary miniseries “The Staircase,” which covered the case from 2001 to 2017.

In HBO Max’s series, Firth portrays Michael, while Collette plays Kathleen. In a teaser HBO Max released alongside the date announcement, Firth narrates a speech intercut with scenes showing both the happy times in the family and the media circus they become embroiled in following Kathleen’s death.

Here’s the trailer. Keep your eye out for Nicole’s flying wig!

And here’s why some people think it was an owl that killed Kathleen instead of the WASP that went down for it (possible spoilers). via Vulture.

Here’s the short version of the owl theory: Kathleen was heading back into the Petersons’ house when an owl silently swooped down and struck her head, digging its talons deep into her scalp. She moved inside to escape the bird, leaving a bit of blood outside. She had been drinking, and there were muscle relaxers and anti-anxiety medication in her system. Woozy and scared, she headed upstairs, presumably to tend to her wounds, and slipped, fell backward, blacked out, and bled to death. Some time later, Michael Peterson, who had been out of earshot outside, came inside and discovered the grisly scene.

So, I don’t know. With Nicole’s wig and Toni jockeying for the top spot, Parker Posey might be able to slip in under the radar to be come the dahhhhling of the HBO Max season.
