Netflix’s “Diana: The Musical” Swept This Year’s Razzie Awards

Spencer took home zero awards at last night’s Oscars, but over at the annual Golden Raspberry Awards, Princess Diana was a big winner. Just not for the reasons most Diana fans would appreciate. Or fans of musical theater. Or the kind of people who can celebrate a good mess-watch. Because Netflix’s Diana: The Musical swept this year’s show. And here I was thinking Bruce Willis was going to be the belle of the ball!

The 2022 Razzie Awards nominations were announced last month, and leading the way were Diana: The Musical, LeBron James’ Space Jam sequel, and pretty much all the movies Bruce Willis made over the past twelve months. And on Saturday, Diana: The Musical became the latest in a long line of cinematic turkeys to be crowned Worst Picture. Diana: The Musical was set to premiere on Broadway in March 2020, but was put on hiatus after Broadway closed down due to COVID. Before it closed down, the entire show was recorded, and Netflix threw it up for everyone’s streaming pleasure on October 1st, 2021 (it eventually made it to Broadway and closed after 33 performances).

Diana grabbed five awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Actress (for Jeanna de Waal, who played the titular Diana), Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. If LeBron James wasn’t around this year, they might have swept the whole shebang. But sadly, LeBron’s terrible acting stole some precious trophies away from the Diana crew. This is truly wild, considering this year is the year House of Gucci existed, although Jared Leto did take home the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor, so the universe isn’t totally off-balance.

Anyone who has seen Diana: The Musical knows that it’s a special kind of bad, but it was up against Infinite, Karen, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and The Woman in the Window for Worst Picture. And let’s just say, I’d rather watch a whole bunch of chorus girls thirst over a shirtless James Hewitt than spend a single second listening to Mark Wahlberg’s character in Infinite attempt to grasp the concept of reincarnation. That’s right, the Razzies nominated an existential, time-jumping film starring Mark Wahlber and it didn’t win Worst Picture. This is how you lose your remaining credibility, Razzies!
