Kim Kardashian Says Her “Get Off Your Ass And Work” Comments Were Taken Out Of Context

Earlier this month Kim Kardashian (pictured above at last night’s Vanity Fair Oscar party) shared some pretty inspiring advice for women in business during her family’s interview with Variety: “Get your fucking ass up and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days.” Not only did this moment turn Kim into a laughingstock meme, it also brought up a lot of not-so-flattering stories from her former employees and triggered discussions about her very obvious privilege. This morning Kim appeared on Good Morning America and talked about it. She told Robin Roberts that her comments were taken out of context, and she’s sorry if us plebs thought she was disrespecting women.

Here’s the full quote, via Glamour:

“Well, that statement that I said was without questions and conversation around it, and it became a sound bite really with no context,” Kardashian told Robin Roberts. “And that sound bite, I came off the notion and the question right before, which was after 20 years of being in the business, you’re famous for being famous.”

Kardashian explained that her tone shifted due to an implication that her success came easily. “The advice that I would give is just that, having a social media presence and being on a reality show does not mean overnight success,” she said. “And you have to really work hard to get there even if it might seem like it’s easy, and that you can build a really successful business off of social media.”
Then she sorta apologized:

“It wasn’t a blanket statement towards women or to feel like I don’t respect the work or think that they don’t work hard,” she said. “I know that they do. It was taken out of context, but I’m really sorry if it was received that way.”

Here’s the GMA interview clip, which is part of an upcoming primetime special with Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, and Kris Jenner:

I actually think this apology is totally unnecessary. Kim had it right the first time! As a lazy bitch woman in business (I have a checking account), I can confirm that I would much rather get rich doing scratch-and-win Bingos than through any actual work.

It’s serving: “I’m ready to scuba dive while simultaneously performing open heart surgery! Also, it’s the future.”
