Lupita Nyong’o’s Many Faces During That Messy Moment At Last Night’s Oscars!

In 2017, awards season gave us the magnificent moment when Winona Ryder’s face went on a journey of emotions at the SAG Awards (and Winona Ryder’s Many Faces went on to win Hot Slut of 2017). And this year’s awards season gave us the magnificent moment when Lupita Nyongo’s face took a trip to HAHAville before quickly moving into OhFuckThisIsSeriousville. Lupita became all of us because at first, she thought that Will Smith’s whoop that trick moment was a staged bit, and then when she realized it wasn’t, her face switched into Oh Damn He’s Not Joking mode.

After Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s bald head, Will Smith turned the Oscars into an episode of The Fresh Prince of The Jerry Spring Show by jumping on the stage to issue a smackdown on Chris. To me, the slap looked like some sloppy stage combat shit, so like many, I thought it was scripted. Lupita thought that too until Will sat down and started screaming at Chris to keep his mouth free of Jada Pinkett-Smith’s name. That’s when a light bulb went off over Lupita’s head and she realized, to quote Tami Roman, it wasn’t not funny. Here’s Lupita’s face going on the journey that many of our faces went on during this mess:

Lupita went from “haha I think I’m supposed to laugh at this weird bit” to “oh shit, he mad” to “okay, yeah, he’s really mad” in a matter of seconds!

Even though Will’s slappity slap slap to Chris Rock’s face was in defense of Jada, he never actually thanked Jada when he won the Best Actor Oscar. HA! But I bet Lupita will thank Jada when she wins the award for Best Facial Expressions During A Messy Televised Awards Show Moment at next year’s Emmys.
