“Bad Vegan” Sarma Melngailis Says Alec Baldwin Is The One That Got Away

You know, I always assumed successful scammers had to be good judges of character and at least a little bit savvy, but Sarma Melngailis, the titular Bad Vegan Netflix keeps insisting I need to learn more about, appears to possess neither of those qualities. Not only did she allegedly catch an STI after raw dogging Louis C.K., she met her estranged husband and the man she claims scammed her, Anthony Strangis on Twitter. And according to People, Sarma’s The One That Got Away is none other than Alec Baldwin. Sarma was actually drawn to Anthony (who went by Shane Fox back then) after seeing his Twitter conversations with Alec. Alec was also a patron of her New York City vegan restaurant Pure Food and Wine, which was the scene of both her and Alec’s crimes. Sarma’s crime was defrauding investors and stealing from her employees to which she pleaded guilty and spent a year incarcerated at Rikers Island. Alec’s crime was inflicting his wife Hilaria Baldwin’s phony Spanish accent upon the world to which he pleaded ignorance and is currently serving 15-life incarcerated in a lie.

Alec and Hilaria met at Pure Food and Wine in 2011 when he heard her speaking Spanish at another table and called out to her “who are you, I must know you, I must know you!” Well, that’s Hilaria’s version of it anyway. But if things had gone Sarma’s way, she would have been the scammer he shares his life with instead. People reports:

The restaurant at the center of Netflix’s new documentary Bad Vegan was visited by plenty of celebrities before it closed, but there was one star who played a bigger part in the history of Pure Food and Wine.

Alec Baldwin visited the restaurant numerous times, according to the film, and even met his wife Hilaria Baldwin there.

In the first episode of the series, owner Sarma Melngailis reveals she first shared a connection with the actor while he was single, but she was not. “I met Alec Baldwin at the restaurant. We talked a lot on the phone and via email. Sometimes when you meet somebody and you feel like you already knew them, it sorta felt like that with him,” says Melngailis in the doc.

An old tweet from Alec in 2011 is shown during the episode. “@OneLuckyDuck @sharma … when in NY, folks, go to Pure Food and Wine on Irving Place. Even if just to stare @sharma,” it read.

Yes, women love to be stared at! Well, that’s what Hilaria says anyway. But Alec and Sarma’s relationship went a little further than mere mutual ogling, even though Sarma had a boyfriend at the time. According to Vanity Fair:

As a relationship with a man 13 years her junior was fraying in 2010, Melngailis met Alec Baldwin, at her restaurant, and accompanied him to a staged reading of Moby Dick in the Hamptons. He soon confided in late-night conversations how much he wanted a wife and children. Her advice to the actor was to get a dog.

However, Alec didn’t want a dog and Sarma wound up adopting one herself which she named Leon. People adds:

“Around the time I got Leon, I had split with my boyfriend at the time. It was the first time in my life that I felt heartbroken — I never felt that way before. So I was just sort of feeling sad and insecure and I’m getting older and sort of a little bit of, I don’t know if I should say this, but a little bit of regret that I never, I had never gone any farther with Alec because I was in a relationship and then it was like a few months later that we split up anyway.”

Melngailis always thought Alec was too old for her, she says, but then of course Alec ended up with Hilaria, who is 25 years his junior.

“Because of Sharma, Alec did meet his wife, it is just that his wife wasn’t actually Sharma,” Salkin adds in the episode

Well, his wife’s not actually Hilaria either, but that’s neither here nor there. Unless of course we ever found out that fellow Bostonians Hillary Thomas, Anthony Strangis, and Sarma all went to high school together or something. That might be somewhere.
