Rachel Zegler Has Been Invited To Present At The Oscars After Saying She Wasn’t Invited

Over the weekend Rachel Zegler, who plays Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, took to social media to reveal that even though she’d “tried it all,” she couldn’t score a ticket to this year’s Oscars. Social media users were “outraged” at Rachel’s snub, mainly because she’s the star of a movie that’s nominated for seven awards, including Best Picture. Well, it turns out publicly airing your grievances pays off, because, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Rachel has been asked to present at the Oscars this Sunday.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that “the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited the up-and-comer to be a presenter at the ceremony.” Rachel is currently shooting Disney’s live-action Snow White remake in London (she’s Snow White and Gal Gadot is The Evil Queen). The Hollywood Reporter says they “hear that efforts are being undertaken to rearrange the film’s shooting schedule to enable Zegler to be at the Oscars.”

The Hollywood Reporter adds that, no, Rachel was not personally nominated this year, so she wasn’t entitled to a ticket:

….the Academy was under no obligation to invite her and Disney was under no obligation to allocate one of its tickets for her. (Each nominee and presenter is offered a pair of tickets, and each studio gets an allotment, though fewer tickets were distributed this year due to COVID-19 precautions.) But many thought both the organization and the studio should have made sure that the star of a best picture nominee was at the ceremony in one capacity or another.

When she initially revealed she wasn’t going to be at the Oscar ceremony, Rachel wrote that her outfit watching from home was probably gonna be “sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.” Will she be able to get a dress in time? Or will she present in sweats? “Surprise, bitch! Next time gimme some more notice if you want me at my best.”

I’m happy Rachel got what she wanted, but if this were me, I’d be a little embarrassed. It’s kinda like when you’re the only girl in the fourth grade who doesn’t get invited to Kayla’s birthday party. Unfortunately, your mom’s absolutely bonkers solution is to call Kayla’s mom and beg for an invite. Kayla’s mother relents, but you’re horrified. Sure, you get to go, but everybody in attendance will know you were unwanted. A pity invitee. A loser. At the party you sit on the arm of the couch, snacking on Cool Ranch Doritos, laughing at everything everyone says (even the sexual stuff that goes over your head), and counting down the hours until you can go home and watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch on ABC’s TGIF. You’ll laugh about it 25 years later while writing a post about Rachel Zegler. But not a day sooner.
