Kanye West Is Still Invited To Attend The Grammys Ceremony

Kanye West recently became the latest physical manifestation of the phrase “Fuck around and find out,” when he was put in a 24-hour Instagram timeout for violating its policies on hate speech and bullying for calling Trevor Noah a racial slur. Kanye was then banned from performing at the Grammys next month. It sounded like the Recording Academy was fulling washing their hands of Ye, but as it turns out, it’s more like they’re just wiping their hands on the nearest napkin. Kanye is still very much invited to the Grammys next month.

Kanye is up for 5 Grammy Awards on April 3rd, and it was rumored that Kanye was scheduled as a performer. Kanye’s rep said that he was yanked as performer and the reason was his “concerning online behavior.” Trevor Noah is also the host of the Grammys so that probably played a part, but even though Kanye’s not allowed to perform on stage, he will be allowed to accept a Grammy if he wins and if he shows up. via Variety:

In the wake of the not-entirely-unexpected news that Kanye West has been barred from performing at the Grammy Awards due to his “concerning online behavior,” he has not been barred from attending the show, sources tell Variety. That means West can walk the red carpet, attend and accept awards at both the Premiere ceremony (the livestreamed event before the main show where non-televised awards are given out) and the main show itself.

Are we sure we want a scorned Kanye at a live broadcast event? Are the Grammys not familiar with the whole Taylor Swift thing? Just because you give Kanye a seat doesn’t mean he’ll stay in it! Kanye might march up to the stage, grab the nearest mic, and announce that he’s performing anyway, so sit tight, you’re about to hear a sloppy, rough, far-from-finished cut of Donda 3.

Variety also notes that there’s a chance Kanye got bumped from the show for incomplete performance plans before the deadline. But it doesn’t mean that Kanye will show up. Variety suggests that Kanye could always host a competing show, simply out of spite for killing his Grammy performance. Essentially, Kanye could try to put on a concert or an event on April 3rd, at exactly the same time the Grammys were happening, and snatch nominees away from the main show at the MGM Grand. But with less than two weeks until showtime, could Kanye pull off such a stunt? The best venue he could get is the MGM Grand parking lot. But, honestly, a bitter Kanye ranting to randoms in a parking lot while desperately trying to get the attention of people who turned him down feels very on-brand at this point.
