Laverne & Shirley in the Army!

In the early-80s, a Hanna-Barbera executive must have been high on LSD while snacking on pork rinds and watching an episode of Laverne & Shirley when a trailer for Private Benjamin came on during the commercials. The exec probably then proclaimed, “Let’s combine all three of these things!” Because in 1981, Hanna-Barbera debuted a Laverne & Shirley cartoon where Laverne and Shirley enlisted in the army and were terrorized by a sergeant pig. Episodes included Laverne and Shirley getting captured by aliens and Shirley hitting her head and hallucinating that she and Laverne time-traveled to the Middle Ages to fight an evil Knight. Yup, the Laverne & Shirley cartoon replaced “Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!” as the most HUH thing in the LASCU (Laverne and Shirley Cinematic Universe).

Several primetime sitcoms got the Saturday morning cartoon treatment in the 1980s. Happy Days got a cartoon spin-off in 1980 with The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang. And a year later, Laverne & Shirley in the Army was unleashed onto the minds of children. As I wrote above, the cartoon followed Laverne and Shirley’s adventures in the army. Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams voiced Laverne and Shirley. And Ron Palillo from Welcome Back, Kotter did the voice of the bossy army pig, Sgt. Squeally. The first season was made up of 13 fucked-up episodes, and here’s the intro.

In 1982, Hanna-Barbera amped up the fuckery and combined Laverne & Shirley in the Army with The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang. They paired it with a Mork & Mindy cartoon and called it the Mork & Mindy/Laverne & Shirley/Fonz Hour. The Mork & Mindy cartoon took up the first half-hour and Laverne & Shirley with The Fonz took up the second half-hour. Laverne and Shirley were still in the army and were joined by The Fonz who was one of the army’s mechanics. Cindy Williams left the live-action Laverne & Shirley show in 1982. So she was replaced in the cartoon by Lynne Marie Stewart (aka Miss Yvonne from Pee-wee’s Playhouse). Here’s the intro to Laverne & Shirley with The Fonz:

Only 8 episodes were made and it didn’t get another season. But if you watched it or remember it, it will forever live on in the file box in your brain marked: Weird But Still Not As Weird As Gilligan’s Planet.
