Dolly Parton Turned Down Her Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nomination Because She Doesn’t Feel Worthy

Last month, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced their seventeen nominees for 2022’s Hall of Fame induction, including Eminem, Lionel Ritchie, Pat Benatar, and Dolly Parton. This was Dolly’s first time being nominated, and, as a legend with a career spanning seven decades, I assumed she’d be a shoo-in. But today Dolly shocked the world when she tweeted that she’s bowing out of the race because she doesn’t feel like she’s earned the right to be inducted. Great, even Dolly fuckin’ Parton has imposter syndrome. Come on, girl-boss, lean in!

Dolly tweeted that she’s “extremely flattered and grateful” for the nomination, but “I don’t feel that I have earned that right.” She adds that she doesn’t want the votes to be split because of her inclusion, so she’s gonna “respectfully” bow out. Dolly writes that she hopes the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will consider her again if she is ever worthy. Dolly says this has inspired her to put out a “hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album” sometime in the future. So it sounds like she’s really hung up on the “rock and roll” of it all. Here’s the tweet:

Is Dolly overthinking the Hall of Fame being named “Rock and Roll”? Because, last I checked, Eminem raps. Lionel Richie does… soft pop R&B? And Pat Benatar… never mind, Pat is pure rock. Other nominees include more obvious rockers like Judas Priest, Rage Against the Machine, and MC5. But loads of country artists have been inducted in past years, including Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, and Jimmie Rogers.

Last month Dolly talked to Billboard about her reaction to being nominated, and hinted that she didn’t feel like a real rock and roller:

“I was absolutely floored when I heard that. I’ve never thought of myself as being rock and roll in any sense of the word — but I guess they judge it on the music and the influence certain songs have had, and I guess I’ve had songs with other people in that realm…I’m not expecting that I’ll get in. But if I do, I’ll immediately, next year, have to put out a great rock and roll album — which I’ve wanted to do for years, like a Linda Ronstadt or Heart kind of thing. So this may have been just a God-wink for me to go ahead and do that. It’s just nice to be nominated.”

Is Dolly forgetting her totally bitchin’ 1991 smash hit, “Rockin’ Years”?

Whew, that shit blew out the speakers on my laptop!
