Anna Sorokin AKA Anna Delvey Gave Her Thoughts On Netflix’s “Inventing Anna”

Must be the season of the grift, cuz con artists like the Tinder Swindler, Elizabeth Holmes, and Anna Sorokin, aka Anna Delvey, are all getting their day in the sun thanks to movies and TV shows about their scams. Netflix reportedly paid Russian-German scheme-queen Anna Delvey $320,000 to adapt her story for Shonda Rhimes’ Inventing Anna, and now she’s sharing her opinions on the series with Cosmopolitan. Unfortunately, Anna did not comment on Julia Garner’s take on her absolutely bonkers accent.

If you’re completely unfamiliar with Anna’s story, here’s the gist: Anna tricked New York’s elite into thinking she was a German heiress with a huge trust fund, scamming millions of dollars from banks, hotels, businesses, and her rich friends. She was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison in 2019 but was released on parole in March 2021. After six weeks of freedom, Anna was taken back into custody by ICE for overstaying her VISA. She’s currently fighting deportation to Germany in a New Jersey jail. Of the $320,000 Anna got from Netflix, she paid $199,000 in restitution, $24,000 in state fines, and $75,000 in attorney fees.

Anna also stole $62,000 from her then-friend Rachel DeLoache-Williams, who was sent into debt because she wasn’t rich. Rachel wrote about the experience in a 2018 Vanity Fair article, and later published a book called My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress. Rachel sold the rights to HBO (they’re working on their own Anna project), and has said that Netflix’s version of events is damaging and depicts her character in an unflattering light.

Cosmo posted a TikTok of Anna talking about the Netflix series from jail. She says, via Yahoo!:

“I don’t think I ordered people around as much. I think I’m more self-aware of the way I come across. Not all the time, but I just don’t think I’m so brazen and shameless.”

She went on, “I personally moved on a very long time ago and I’m absolutely not in the same place, but I’m also being affected by the way the world sees me and by what people think of me. I exist in relation to everybody else and to the world, I don’t just exist on my own.”

The conwoman added, “I did move on in some aspects. But in some others, I’m still in the same place.”

Anna Delvey (yes, I choose to refer to her by her grift-name) is a mess, but I can’t help but be in awe of how much money she managed to scam. I can’t even ignore my hydro bill for a month without the feds blowing up my phone. Next time I’m just gonna pick up and scream, “I already told you, I wired you da maaahney from overseas!”
