Zoë Kravitz Again Mentions How She Was Told She Was Too “Urban” To Audition For “The Dark Knight Rises” (UPDATE)

Zoë Kravitz is currently starring as Catwoman in Matt ReevesThe Batman, and she could’ve been part of the Batman-verse years ago. Because back when The Dark Knight Rises was being made a decade ago, Zoë tried to audition for a role. However, she was told no. Why? Because according to some racists casting people, Zoë was too “urban.” And as we know, the only “urban” casting people like is Urban Outfitters.

Zoë spoke with The Guardian about her work on The Batman which co-stars Robert PattinsonColin Farrell, and Paul Dano, and is killing it at the box office. Zoë says that to play Catwoman, she trained for four months and watched videos of big cats to study their moves. And years ago, Zoë was shut out of auditioning for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (Anne Hathaway played Catwoman in that one). via The Hollywood Reporter:

“I don’t know if it came directly from Chris Nolan… I think it was probably a casting director of some kind, or a casting director’s assistant. …Being a woman of color and being an actor and being told at that time that I wasn’t able to read because of the color of my skin, and the word “urban” being thrown around like that, that was what was really hard about that moment.”

Zoë talked about this before in 2015 with Nylon, saying to them at the time: “They told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t “going urban.” It was like, “What does that have to do with anything?” I have to play the role like, “Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?”

Zoë went on to say in her interview with The Guardian that she’s not really into doing roles that are specifically about race.

“At one point, all the scripts that were being sent were about the first Black woman to make a muffin or something… Even though those stories are important to tell, I also want to open things up for myself as an artist.”

I’m sure that whoever told Zoë that racist nonsense back around 2012 is getting their ass handed to them by their bosses now. Not only because of racism but because they ruined a chance at meeting her sexy-ass dad Lenny Kravitz. BIG MISTAKE!

UPDATE: Zoë wrote in an Instagram Story today that she wasn’t trying to audition for Catwoman back then (she was going for a smaller role) and also wasn’t trying to drag Christopher Nolan:
