The Audition Process For The Role Of Madonna In Her Biopic Is Reportedly “Grueling”
As we know, Madonna is currently working on her own biopic for Universal Pictures with Madge herself directing and co-writing it. Madge wrote the first draft with Diablo Cody (who reportedly quit that bitch) and is now reportedly working with screenwriter Erin Wilson on the script. Auditions are currently happening to find the lucky actress who will be screamed at by Madonna for not doing it right play Madonna in the movie. And sources say that the process is pretty much as insane as you’d expect and one person called it “grueling.” Do the auditioning actresses have to pretend that Hard Candy is a good album? Brutal!
The Hollywood Reporter says that casting director Carmen Cuba is the one leading the search for the next Madonna. We’ve already heard that Florence Pugh, Julia Garner, Sydney Sweeney, and Barbie Ferreira are in the running for the role. THR adds that several other actresses and performers have auditioned for the role and that includes Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, Emma Laird. Bebe Rexha, and Sky Ferreira. One rep with knowledge of the audition process told THR that it is “grueling,” reportedly featuring hours and hours of intense choreography.
According to sources, the hopefuls participate in intense–sometimes up to 11-hour-a-day–choreography sessions with Madonna’s choreographer, after which there are choreography sessions with Madonna, herself. And then there are callbacks, which consist of readings with Madonna, as well as singing auditions with the superstar.
“You have to be able to do everything,” says one person with knowledge of the process. The movie, which sources say currently culminates with her landmark, 1990 Blonde Ambition tour (this, of course, may change as the script continues to develop), will require dancing and singing sequences, meaning that after the audition process is over, the would-be star is still looking at months’ worth of intense training ahead of a potential start date.
THR says that the role of Madonna is a coveted one since the biopic will probably get a wide theatrical release and lots of attention. But Universal is apparently waiting for a final draft of the script, budget details, and a cast before they officially greenlight it. So it seems like Madonna and company are auditioning every working young actress in Hollywood. But I’m wondering, where is Lady Gaga’s name on the list of potential Madonnas?
