Julia Garner, Sydney Sweeney, And Barbie Ferreira Have All Reportedly Auditioned For The Madonna Biopic
The Madonna biopic, co-written by Diablo Cody (maybe) and directed by Madge herself, continues to chug along. Last we heard, Uncut Jahhhms star Julia Fox went to dinner with Madonna to “talk about” the movie. Now The Ankler is reporting that Euphoria actresses Sydney Sweeney and Barbie Ferreira have officially auditioned, as well as Ozark and Inventing Anna star Julia Garner. If the role requires snot, tears, and tits, go with Sydney. If they want more tough New Yorker, go with Julia. And if Madge wants to cast a sycophant who’s easy to boss around, don’t go with Barbie.
The Ankler columnist Jeff Schneider writes:
Whoever plays Madonna will have to be able to pull off a certain “bad girl” attitude and all three of these actresses seem like they could deliver that element. Reps have equated this role to the female version of the Elvis biopic, which saw Hollywood’s up-and-coming leading men jostle to curry favor with Baz Luhrmann, only for Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) to beat out bigger names such as Harry Styles and Miles Teller.
Last year there were rumors that Florence Pugh was shortlisted for the role. In September Madonna told a red carpet reporter, “I don’t know. We haven’t decided yet. But she’s definitely up there on the list, if she’ll have me.” But if they’re holding auditions, it sounds like Florence didn’t bite. That or she’s busy playing another power-hungry bitch in Midsommar 2: Sew Em’ All Into Bears. It’s also rumored that Julia Fox is in talks to play Debi Mazar in Madge’s biopic:
I sorta feel bad for the actress who eventually gets cast as young Madonna. Present-day director Madonna will micromanage and criticize their every acting choice. And then, one day, the Queen of Pop will finally have enough, lock her leading lady in a prop closet, and insist on playing the role herself. Madge may be 63 but filters exist:
